Hello
My husband is 53 years old and had his prostate removed last week. All went well just sore, catheter uncomfortable and tired. He is on a trial due to having high risk prostate cancer gleesen score 9. We just hope and pray the cancer will be gone, but we need to wait for the scans. We have two young daughters but are trying to be positive.
My husband is having his catheter out next week and I was wondering if anyone could recommend some continence pads we could buy?
This forum has shown me the hope and kindness of others.
Many Thanks
Gill
Hi Gill,
I used pads from boots own brand and tena for men and both have been very good. I am 47 years old and had my prostate removed early in Nov last year. I used level 3 tena and extra boots own, I used 5/6 a day at 1st and used less as time went on. I currently used the protectors from tena which are the thinnest that they do, I use 1 a day and you get 14 in a pack for £4. I started back at work 3 weeks ago on a phased return 4hr then 6hr etc and the protector pads have been fine, I have a physical job and was worried but it's been fine. I guess the next step will be to stop using the. But that'll be when I'm ready or when I stop coughing, sneezing, laughing too much
It's tough at 1st and you get frustrated but it's ok and it gets easier as your pelvic floor improves.
This is only my experience and your husband may be vastly different. Hope this helps a little and good luck to you and your husband.
Agree with Dan . I quite liked the Tena pants , but they are expensive, but very reliable for special occasions. My op was 7 weeks ago to day , and now going without protection , other than long walks or when beer may be taken to excess . Good luck . Bill
Hi Dan
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me. I will get some pads by boots and Tena. Glad to hear things are improving for you and I hope going back to work is ok. I try to make my husband laugh as I believe it to be the main medicine of life, so he will require pads for a little while.
I wish you all the best for the future.
Kind Regards
Gill
The other problems I’ve had are
1. The pads , especially once wet , are quite abrasive on my poor penis , so I always spent time without pads . But I think pads are very important in giving you confidence to do stuff , otherwise you just stick to 20 metres round your toilet .
2. I was always dry at night - I think most people are . But if I had to get up during the night , it was as if my pelvic floor had gone to sleep and I leaked badly . I didn’t want to wear pads at night , because of the above , so I had to have an old towel at hand . I have now learned to coordinate things better.
sorry about the gruesome details , it was a difficult 3 or 4 weeks though .
Im 69 , so I’m sure you’re husband will recover more quickly and less messily
best wishes
Bill
Hi Gill, my husband got incontinence pads supplied from NHS but he found them to be a bit bulky so like others have said I got him mens Tena pads level 2 from Amazon and they have been brilliant for him , at fist he used 4 a day and now is down to 1 , wishing your husband well and you too
