Hello and sorry if this has been posted before in some form somewhere. This a bit new to me. But am just seeking experience of what lies ahead for a relative that is very close to me. all treatment has been cancelled (chemo) as nothing is now working. And now has 10mg Zomorph pills and also has been given 10mg Morphine Oral solution (which is not yet being taken as trying not to for the time being).

As far as I can understand. This is just pain/symptom management and now nothing to do with treating or holding back the cancer anymore? So I guess what I am saying is... Is this now where the tide now turns and its basically a waiting game before "time" ?

I know everyone is different but I have no idea or even given stats as to a ball park figure as to how long I have left with the person (am not saying him/her in case they too are on this forum). I would not want them to know to as to not add any unwanted extra mental stress as they worry already about "afterwards" when they are not present. But basically its a parent..

Thanks for any kind of help.

  • I’m so sorry to read this. Without more information it’s not possible to answer your question.

If all treatment for prostate cancer has been stopped and pain control is needed I would be looking for hospice involvement as they are experts in pain management.

Trials are also possible but only if they meet eligibility criteria.

  • I'm assuming we're talking about prostate cancer?

I pretty much agree with Ido4 - we can't give specific advice without a fair bit of information.

Broadly, there does come a time, too often, when all the available treatments are no longer giving benefit. Bearing in mind that most treatments have side effects, often quite unpleasant, it would be cruel, as well as pointless, to continue to offer them.

But symptoms can usually be managed, at least in part, and as Ido4 says, hospices are the experts here.

If there's any specific issues, ask away!

Thank you kindly for the reply. Apologies for late reply. Things have been eventful. In short you are correct and relative now referred over to a hospice and told cancer treatment itself they are at the end of the line now and nothing left to treat. Now on Morphine liquid and patches and paracetamol to manage pain. along with injections in the tummy every three months (to continue). Now found shadows in liver and something in lung. I am assuming any prognosis if asked for is on the low side but yet to ask oncologist :(

    Thank you again Pray
