Hi all,
Does anyone know if the effectiveness of zoladex jabs weakens after a while? I've been on them every 3 months for 18 months now, and my PSA has so far remained stable at about 1 which is very pleasing, but I'm told I'll be on them for life, so just wondered if my body will get used to them and therefore they become less effective. Any opinions gratefully received!

I've been on my zoladex for 21 mths now and was told for 3 years then a review to see if psa still remains low. Mine has been 0.001 last 2 consultations. I was also told I could be on the for life but read they start to become less effective after 2 to 3 yrs. I was rating hoping I could come off them and have an active sex life again but not sure if that will be possible. Was also told if psa started to rise after 3 yrs I might need a bit of chemo. I've had 37 days of RT last year and regular zoladex 3 mthly. So here's hoping. Good luck to yourself and everyone of us on here going through much the same.
It's the cancer that changes, not your body's ability to cope.
There comes a time when the cancer becomes 'castrate resistant', and the Zoladex can't hold it, but that could be a long way off. Everyone knows that cancer advances; but people tend to think of that in terms of tumour size, numbers of metastases, location of spread. But cancer also advances at a cellular level; the prostate cancer cells become less 'differentiated' over time, until at a later stage, they're simply 'cancer cells'. This means that therapy that is specific to that cancer may no longer be effective. Many people with stage 4 disease reach that point.
Sounds depressing, but that is likely to be a long way off (years), and there are other options. Plus new things are in the pipeline.
