Hi all.
I’m sure this is quite normal, but I am 18 days post surgery, and 3 days post catheter removal, and I have just passed quite a lot of blood the last time I went to pee.
There tends to be a very slight trace when I start to pass urine, but on this occasion it was full on blood, very similar to after I’d had my biopsy.
Anyone had any similar experiences?

Hi Happyhacker
Sorry to hear you are having this problem.
I am experiencing the same starting 4 days after the catheter was removed. Everything was going really well up until that point. I'm not sure if I over did the walking prior to this ,as I was feeling so good I did some relatively long brisk walking every day. I forgot things are still healing and the tissues sutured together are still weak after 2 weeks.
It started when I noticed a discomfort which I hadn't felt before ( as I had very little or no pain). Then the next thing was blood with blot clot and scabs coming out ( quite shocking), and then the urine became clear. However over the following days it seems to be getting worst, especially first thing in the morning. I made sure I drank enough water to clear out any clots and the urine clear again.
Anyway , as it seem to be getting worst I contacted the specialist nurse, and I was told this can happen when the scab around the bladder- urethera joint falls off, along with any sutures ( around 2-3 weeks post surgery), you can get bleeding. How much and how long for can vary for everyone. I know a friend had no bleeding at all. The important thing is that you can still pee , if you are finding it difficult to pee you need to contact your DR or nurse.
As mine didn't seem to settling after 4 days they told me to stop the heparin injection. This was after consulting the Surgeon, and as based on my fitness/ weight/ no other Mh and mobile they felt it was safe to do, this will not be right for everyone. Never stop any medication prescribed without consulting your Dr, as DVT can be fatal.
Anyway after 48hrs stopping the heparin the bleeding has reduced significantly, even though theres still a little bit of blood at the beginning it is improving.
I would contact your nurse or surgeon anyway just to check, if you having done so already.
Anyway, hopefully yours will settle on its own as it starts to heal.
Hi.
Thanks so much for your reply, it’s really helped put my mind at rest. I had one pee yesterday where there was quite a lot of blood and then, after drinking a couple of pints of water, it settled down.
First thing this morning I was passing rusty coloured urine and since then it has just been a little blood at the start of every visit to the loo.
It would seem that it is starting to settle, and my plan is to see how things pan out in the next 24/48 hours. If it continues then I’ll seek advice, but it was the sheer amount of blood yesterday which sent me into panic mode!
Best of luck with your continued recovery, and thanks again.
HH
