Tamsulosin

Before I was diagnosed with my early, low grade, low risk prostate cancer, my urologist, following DRE assumed I had BPH and prescribed tamsulosin. However , the biopsy results has changed everything. Should I continue to take this medication? I've read contradicting reports that it may reduce PSA levels. As I'm on active surveillance, I'm concerned that the medication may give a false result on my 3 month PSA test. Has anyone got any information/experience of this? ThomasA

  • My understanding is that the fact you are taking tamsulosin is noted on your blood test paperwork and the medics will take that into account as it does lower your PSA level. This will allow them to still monitor you properly. Hope this helps.

  • Thank you. My last PSA was 3.72 and that was just before I started the medication and had the biopsies done. So you are saying it doesn't reduce PSA levels anyway.

  • It does lower your PSA but the medics will allow for that when they review your tests.

  • Sorry I misread your previous comment and it does reduce PSA levels. Thank you.
