Hi all

I’m looking to ask for some advise, if anyone as experience of this it would be great if you could let me know if this is normal and what can be done to relieve the pain.

I had my prostate removed a week ago today along with the right side nerve bundle and left and right side lymph nodes. Apart from 5 days of constipation and I suppose the usual aches and pains I thought I got away lightly with the affect from the operation. I apologise if this is sounds explicit but I do not know how else to put it. Until today that is, throughout the day my penis and foreskin has swelled up to the point that I cannot pull back the foreskin the pain and discomfort is getting unbearable , also I’m struggling  to wash around the head I still have a catheter fitted until next week and am worried about keeping all the tube and under the foreskin clean. Does anyone know if this is normal and what I can do to remedy this. Or should I be contacting the hospital.
Again I apologise for the terminology used in this message

  • Hi DJG

I see that u haven't had a reply yet but sorry to say that I can't really help.  I have not come across this problem before , I would imagine that it is not a usual side effect after surgery.

I would suggest that u contact your GP or betters still the cancer centre where u were treated for best advice.

Perhaps someone will post who has had this issue, I hope that u get some help.

    Best wishes

    Steve

  • Hi DJG, the end of the penis has been assaulted in a few ways but I would suggest that you should seek medical help from what you have written. There should be something available to help you and allow you to tolerate the catheter for the required time.
    All the best,

  • Hi Pete

sorry if my post scared you that was not the intention of it. I ended up going to A&E Turns out that I had a reaction to the catheter and the  bruising from the op has caused the swelling. Unfortunately for me this happened on a Thursday when the catheter team I am under don’t work typical lol. I spoke to them on the Friday and they reassured that swelling whilst not common sometimes happens and not to worry to much.
One thing I would suggest you get is a few tubes of Instillagel it comes in a needless syringe it’s a sterile gel and contains a mild anaesthetic. This helps lube the catheter and slightly dull the end of the penis you just squirt some down the inside of the foreskin and work it around this will help a lot with lubrication. Available over the counter at boots I got two tubes for £3.60 so not expensive. Just wish the nurses and surgeon had mentioned to me to  keep the catheter tube lubed up. Hope this has put your mind at rest. Good luck with your op I hope all goes well for you. Like I said in my original post apart from a few aches and pains from the operation all was good, and what happened to me is not that common, so don’t get worrying unnecessarily

  • Hi DJG

Thank you very much for your reassuring reply . Thanks for the helpful tips, i shall purchase a couple of tubes just in case ! Keep going strong .  pate53

  • Hi DJG,

I had the operation four months ago. After the operation, my penis and testicles were black and blue but not painful. After one week the catheter really started to get very uncomfortable, it stayed that way until I had the catheter out. When leaving the hospital the nurse did say the fact that you have a tube sticking out of your penis makes you prone to infections. Hopefully the tube is out by now and everything is back to normal.
