Arm pain - could it be related to bone mets?

My partner has advanced prostate cancer, spread to the bones - mostly spine and pelvis, but one on his sternum where it joins the ribs. He's been getting a lot of arm pain lately, relating to the ulnar nerve - the one that hurts if you hit your funnybone. I read yesterday that the pain can be caused by compression as the nerve passes under the collarbone - could it be the met in the sternum that's causing it? I just wondered if anyone here had any experience of this. We see the oncologist in a couple of weeks. My partner's just had 5 sessions of RT on the base of his spine, to try and fix the pain from pressure on the sciatic nerve. He's on zoladex, came off enzalutamide because of the fatigue, and oncology say he's not strong enough for chemo. His PSA is rising - was 75 in June, they haven't done a test since....maybe they assume it'll continue to rise. I begin to feel he's running out of options.

  • Sorry to hear of your partner’s prostate cancer and the pain he is in. I can’t answer your question but just wanted to wish you both all the best and hope someone can answer your question soon.

He had an MRI of his neck last week, which has come back as showing pressure on the nerve to his arm - I assume from growth of the mets in his spine.

  • I can't answer your question, I'd be guessing, but hopefully the Zoladex will hold things for a while. It may be time to ask for a referral to the hospice team - not because he needs the hospice, but because they are usually the experts in pain control. It does sound as treatment options are limited, but see what the consultant comes up with.

    Good luck to you both.

Yes....we've just spoken to the oncologist on the phone, and he says the cancer is progressing, and it's a case of relieving symptoms rather than treating the disease any further. He's re-referring us to palliative care, and I can contact the hospice outreach team and work out how things go from here. Sad, but pretty much what I'd expected.

  • Sorry to hear that, but you're in good hands.

  • Hi linopartner

I'm so sorry to learn of your partners pain. I am in a very similar position in that my cancer has recently spread to my ribs and sternum but I have not experienced any pain in my arm. It does sound to me as if your diagnosis may be correct but hopefully the Oncologist will be able to advise.

I too am experiencing terrible lower back pain and have been offered radiotherapy but they have told me this can only be done once.

Can you tell me if it has eased your Partners pain? If so, I think I will go for it as I am fed up with pain killers and the usual side effects one has to endure.

    Very best wishes,

He doesn't seem to be getting much hip pain after the RT, tho that may be because he's lying nearly flat - it was always worse if he sat up straight. His arm pain was worse when he had the RT, because they had him on a hard table, doesn't seem too bad at present. Can't really advise on whether it will help in your situation.

  • Hi

Just a thought was he offered radium 223 ? This is supposed to help with the strength of the bones and ease pain, trouble is it only lasts for around nine months to a year.

Sorry he’s going through all this, myself I’am trying to leave certain things that they can do till as late as possible, my plan B you could say.

stay safe hope you find something to ease his pain.

No, he wasn't offered it. Just palliative care....as yet the hospice haven't been in touch, so I don't know if they've received the referral. .
