Having had a diagnosis of localised non-advanced prostate cancer in April and having had consultations with surgeons and radiologists I’ve decided to opt for RALP. I know individual experiences are likely to vary greatly, but I’d be very grateful for any advice or sharing of experiences of anyone who’s undergone the procedure. For example how long might it take to return to normal activities e.g. driving, going for a walk, riding a bike, carrying shopping, playing with the grandchildren (aged 1 to 5). Also how much of a difficulty incontinence might prove and how long it might take to get over it. Any suggestions on what I can do to assist my recovery would be very much appreciated. I’m in my early seventies, in good general health and pretty active at the moment. Thanks.
Hello BertieBB
I was diagnosed in Feb 2018 ( Gleeson 3+3) at 64 and had Robotic Prostectomy in July 18.
My personal recovery went really well and I was a bit naughty and felt good enough to play golf after 9 days.
Couple of weeks with pads and excersises and
Waterworks and erectile issues soon came back to normal. My PSA levels were 0.01/0.02 for the last 3 yrs.UpTo my most resent test when unfortunately it looks like a recurrence as my PSA has gone UpTo 0.25
I am now waiting to hear about my next stage possibly radiotherapy and or Hormone therapy to hopefully clear it up or at least suppress to a non serious level.
Anyway my op went very well so hope yours goes the same.Good luck.
Thanks Loosechange for sharing your experience. I hope your rise in PSA is just a blip and if it isn’t it gets sorted soon.
I had the da Vinci four and half years ago. Took me about six weeks before I was back to normal. Hardly any incontinence. Slight leak occasionally but pads take care of that. ED prolems solved with the little blue tablet. Psa been below 0.1 since op.
Good luck.
Many thanks Dennis 1982 for your encouraging post. Hope things go as well for me.
Hi Bertie
I had my op in April, I am 69. The waterworks are still causing me a problem, it is getting better but very slowly. I have just started taking Viagra which is not working at the moment, half of my nerves were spared so theoretically it should return to normal.
My initial diagnosis was a local T2 tumour unfortunately the biopsy of the parts that they removed showed it to be T3B. Post operation I have had one PSA test which showed 0.01 which is very good.
Prior to the operation I could not decide what procedure to have I am glad I went with the op but it's not for everyone.
Hi,I had my prostate removed with non nerve sparing surgery, 1at May this year, had slight incontinence for about a month after, but as had been said already leak pads saved any iffy moments, have got full control now, and only use a pad if going long journey , had ED prior to up as also diabetic so probably more to do with that, surgeon has referred me to local hospital to see if they can help, PDA now not recordable so hoping that has solved the C issue, I am 61 an had knee reconstruction 4 July so seems things are looking up, good luck with your treatment,
