Post Surgery Side Effects

Hi! My mom had surgery in November (it was not cancer) and is still having "side effects." Her movements are extremely slow, especially walking. Sometimes it appears if her feet are 'heavy' and she struggles to pick them up to take steps. She's had multiple MRI's and Cat Scans that show nothing abnormal. We thought this was temporary, but after almost 4 months, its quite worrisome. We are not getting much from the surgeon or ENT that assisted in the surgery. She goes back to the Endocrinologist in April for additional stimulation (cortisol) testing on her thyroid etc. Has anyone else experienced this, or know someone who has? Thank you.

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to read that your mum is suffering from side effects of her recent surgery but glad that she doesn't have cancer. It must be very frustrating for her.

I don't have any experience with these side effects but didn't want you to think that nobody had read your post. I presume that she has been to see her GP and they've not been able to help further either.

I hope she manages to get this sorted soon.

    Hi

Thank you for your response. No, we have not contacted her GP. Her GP was actually the one that noticed the tumor on mom's MRI and contacted the Neurosurgeon. He was not comfortable taking her case, so she was referred to another town a couple of hours from where we live. Maybe that's why we haven't thought about contacting her GP? We have been reaching out to the dr's in the town where the surgery was done. I will suggest she do that. Maybe she needs to reevaluate her medication since mom is now on new meds post surgery. An admin from this page also sent me a personal email asking for more information to ensure I am in the right forum/support group. Hopefully this post will reach someone that can point us in a positive direction. As of right now, the doctors have not been much help.

    Thanks again!

  • Hi

I'd really love to say that I'm sure there'll be someone in this group who's suffered with the same post op problems that your mum has but I think that's a long shot Disappointed

I can understand you reaching out to the group because your mum's doctors haven't been able to sort out her problems but, as none of us are medically trained, we're not likely to be much help either.

Having a chat to her GP is probably a good starting point if she's been discharged from hospital otherwise, if she's still under the care of the hospital, does she have a clinical nurse specialist assigned to her who she can contact if she has problems or questions she needs answering?

    Hi

I definitely understand the group not being able to provide medical "advise" persay, just looking for someone that might have had similar issues, that could shed some light with their diagnosis. We've now been referred to a neurologist, so hopefully that will get the ball rolling for answers.

    Thank you

Hi I’ve just joined, I had my second surgery a year ago in June, the regrowth started 2 years ago in August, I ran a half marathon in the October and then every month afterwards my running was harder and I even struggled to walk, my legs were so heavy it felt like I was dragging somebody behind me, so I’m 15 months post op and the walking got worse and no explanation, My hormones aren’t great and I’ve been diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency, I started on the replacement 18th August, my general well being improved after 4 weeks and I started to feel like my legs were my own, I can now up to a mile instead of struggling to do up to a third. Has your mum improved or been told why she was struggling?
