Hi, my husband was diagnosed with penile cancer this week. We’re still waiting for our MRI to conclude how deep it spread, a CT body scan and the surgery scheduled by the end of next week. Our doctor referred us to a different oncologist since the surgery would involve partial or full glansectomy.
it all came as a terrible shock as my husband is only in his thirties and it is an extremely rare cancer to have at this age.
As we are completely new in all this and still a bit stunned by the news, I wanted to ask people who have already dealt with the same experience.
How long and how bad is the recovery in case of full glansectomy? From your experience.
What are the possible complications you experienced after the surgery?
How to prevent some of them if possible at all?
Are there any options for a reconstructive glans surgery if the cancer is gone?
Im trying to find ways to help my husband to go through this hell. And I am struggling myself as we have three little children and its extremely scary time for all of us. I of course pray it hasn’t spread. The ultrasound confirmed there were no visible changes to lymphs. And it made us hopeful that it is an isolated cancer.
It would also help to know that someone had a similar diagnosis and fully recovered after that without C coming back.
Maybe you could also help to recommend a good surgeon for a second opinion.
Thank you.
That’s good to hear.. Fingers crossed for your husbands results, I hope he gets the all clear soon.
Hi everyone. I have finished the 5 week cycle of chemoRadiotherapy. Boy, that was tough. No one warned me about radiation burns!! Had full body CT Scan last week and I am awaiting a phone call from my Consultant tomorrow to give me the results. Had lots of nausea and sickness the past 4 weeks but it's easing off now.
I will let you know what the results are in my next blog.
Good luck everyone going through difficulties.
Hi, I hope both you and your husband are doing as well as can be expected- sending prayers your way.
I was wondering what made your husband get his penis looked at?
I've got a dark mole on the head of my penis.I had it looked at about 18 months ago and the dermatologist was really dismissive. Went back to my Dr again about 7 months ago- he referred me under the 2 week rule to see another dermatologist. The nurse who looked at it said 'she wasn't worried, but would refer me to see a male Doctor in 6 months'. I saw him yesterday and he's referred me to a plastic surgeon under the two week rule to get it removed and a biopsy performed.
The mole started off as just a bit of light discolouration on the glans and got darker and more pronounced as time went on.. It occasionally feels painful but largely you'd not know it was there..
Whilst I was there he also found a discoloured shiny patch of skin on my scalp- been referred for a biopsy of that too..
I mean both hopefully are nothing, however it's a bit disconcerting to have this dismissed for so long and then suddenly to be going down this pathway. Everything I read is 'if it's caught early'- well, it's been on going on years now. Guess time will tell, I was just wondering what symptoms your husband had?
Hello Northy183
My husband had a small lesion which wasn't healing. On visiting the GP he immediately said he was certain it was cancer, and like you he was fast tracked. Everything for my husband has been fast in terms of operations and treatment, it's just waiting for the biopsy results that takes so long. We are still waiting for the histology report after his partial glansectomy operation, which was nearly 5 weeks ago, but we were told that it could be around 6 weeks for the results. I hope your results are negative for cancer, but it sounds like you will be fast tracked now until they find out.
Good luck, I hope he's okay. Can I ask what it looked like? Mine is a fairly dark browny black mole looking thing on the back of the glans.. I also get pain in the penile area.. I've been dealing with a persistent bad smell.. I'm wondering if that could be cancer related..
Hi northy183
I was diagnosed with penile cancer in 2022, I originally went to GP with a lump on the head of my penis, the GP I saw didn't think it was cancer but referred me on the 2 week rule, the consultant I saw, took 1 look and said it was almost certainly cancer, he offered a biopsy, but did say it would just confirm what he believed. As for what it looked like best way to describe would be it looked like a sore red spot about the size of small finger nail. It did start to have a smell to it at times. By sounds of it with the doctor ordering a biopsy is just a precaution in your case. Hope you get biopsy soon and results come back fairly quickly and are good for you. I try and come on here regularly so if need any other information or just someone to talk to feel free to leave me a message.
William.
