Penile Cancer

Hi, my husband was diagnosed with penile cancer this week. We’re still waiting for our MRI  to conclude how deep it spread, a CT body scan and the surgery scheduled by the end of next week. Our doctor referred us to a different oncologist since the surgery would involve partial or full glansectomy.
it all came as a terrible shock as my husband is only in his thirties and it is an extremely rare cancer to have at this age.
As we are completely new in all this and still a bit stunned by the news, I wanted to ask people who have already dealt with the same experience.
How long and how bad is the recovery in case of full glansectomy? From your experience.
What are the possible complications  you experienced after the surgery?

How to prevent some of them if possible at all?
Are there any options for a reconstructive glans surgery if the cancer is gone?

Im trying to find ways to help my husband to go through this hell. And I am struggling myself as we have three little children and its extremely scary time for all of us. I of course pray it hasn’t spread. The ultrasound confirmed there were no visible changes to lymphs.  And it made us hopeful that it is an isolated cancer.

It would also help to know that someone had a similar diagnosis and fully recovered after that without C coming back.

Maybe you could also help to recommend a good surgeon for a second opinion.

Thank you.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I'm not a member of this group but noticed that your post hadn't had any replies. Responding to you will 'bump' it back to the top of the discussion list again.

While you're waiting for replies it would be great if you could put something about your husband's  diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi, I’m very sorry to hear that, I was diagnosed with penile cancer on the 29/10 and referred to at George’s hospital which they saw me within a week 5/11. I saw proff Nick Watkins who said what surgery he was going to do. Foreskin removal and glan resurfacing, I’ve had no biopsy or scans carried out at present, my surgery is going to be in two weeks, just had pre oops. I posted my story on here and only had 1 reply so left , just came back on as the guy who did reply just messaged me.I don’t think you will get a lot of help on here which is a shame as you get a lot of views but no response. Apparently there are some groups on Facebook I’m not on Facebook so haven’t bothered. Good luck with hubby , I hope it all goes well for him.  Kevin.

  • Hi

I was diagnosed in February this year and had many CT scans and ultrasound scans to see if the cancer spread anywhere in my body. Following the scans results the surgeon decided to do a glansectomy operation within 1 month with reconstruction using a skin graft from my thigh.

Following the operation , I had a catheter for 1 month which was very difficult for me. Also, I was not allowed to bath or shower, only strip wash. On the 13th March 2024, the surgeon confirmed that the cancer did not spread and after many other tests. Now, I have to go for CT scand and ultrasound scans every 3 months as part of the ongoing observation for the next 5 years.

I have to go to UCHL in Euston and also Westmoreland Hospital, which I must say are exceptional.

Please feel free to contact me , maybe in private if your husband would like to discuss what he is going throught following his diagnosis.

  • Hi, thank you for your advice. I put the info about my husband’s case in my profile. Hope that helps a bit. I just wasn’t sure how this forum really operates and how to message people directly.
it is such a horrible time for our family. I find the waiting for the results the hardest. And your hope keeps crushed with every biopsy/surgery. Trying to take one step at a time.

  • Thank you. Sorry to hear about your experience. I hope the surgery went well and you’re much better now going through your recovery. Have you had the lymph nodes biopsy during the surgery as well?

    All the best to you,

  • Hi Xav,
Thank you for sharing. I have posted some update in my profile. We’re currently waiting for our second surgery in Princess Grace, scheduled for next week, full glansectomy and SLNB. I would like my husband to contact you in private if you don’t mind. I think it might help him to hear about your experience and share his. I am not sure how you can do it though here. Never used chat forums before.
    Sorry.

  • Surgery is tomorrow the 6/12 and I think there going to do the test on the lymph node’s if they can get the people who do it on board that day.  Kevin .

  • Good luck tomorrow, Kevin. I hope it goes well and as planned. It’s a big day and hopefully it will be over soon and you’ll be on your recovery route. All the best to you.

  • Many thanks it’s all mind boggling. Kevin.

  • Hi, sorry that not many people reply on this forum, I haven't been on here lately, as still fighting my cancer which started as penile cancer, in November 2022, if you have read the other threads on here you will see what I have had done over last 2 years, I know from my experience it can be a long journey,  but mine had spread to lymph nodes, and also came back within less than a year, not trying to scare you it is rare to come back. Hopefully your husband will get the treatment/ operation as soon as possible, and hopefully make a speedy recovery without it returning at such a young age, I felt why me and I was 54 at the time. Any questions you have post on here and I am sure you will get answers. ( I will try and check in on here more often)
