Hi, I’m new to this group. My dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July after a 7 month battle to get doctors to listen to him as he kept being told the pain was due to ibs and they refused to scan him. I live 3 hours away and we see him as often as we can. He was told it was inoperable then later offered a lifeline that they may be able to shrink the tumour with chemo and remove it. He waited 12 weeks from diagnosis until they started his chemo. His body couldn’t tolerate it and it almost killed him, he was in hospital for 3 weeks. After he recovered he continued chemo at 50% dose. He then tried 75% and again ended up in hospital. He has decided to stop chemo for now and seems a lot better in himself but his body is so weak. He has lost all of the muscle in his legs and now in his arms. They delivered a hospital bed to his home this week. I just don’t know what is happening, he tells me very little, trying to protect me I think. Sometimes he sounds ok, others he’s very confused and slurry. His partner does not communicate with me at all, I’ve only known he was poorly when I couldn’t get hold of him and had to phone round hospitals trying to find him. I so worried that I won’t be there when the time comes. He is not yellow, he is not bloated, but his legs have totally wasted away. He’s good in himself one day then not the next. I just want to know what to look out for when I visit so I know whether I need to go more often as I just know that otherwise I will get a call out of the blue saying that he’s gone and that is my worst fear
Hello Amber
I am sorry to hear your news. Symptoms of pancreatic cancer vary considerably. Some people have considerable pain, others none. Some are jaundiced as you mention your dad is not or some have ascites (bloating) as the disease progresses. It is very hard to give advice so I suggest that you just visit as often as you can and enjoy your visits as he will too.
