Hi, my lovely 88 year old mum has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer.  She had a full hysterectomy in April & is just about back to where she was before the operation. On Wednesday she starts her first chemo on precautionary advice as her blood results are normal.  I don’t know if she should have this, at her great age I think quality over quantity & am worried how she will respond, but it’s her decision. I think she’s doing it for me rather than being seen as giving in, which I really don’t think that way at any. She lost over a stone following the operation & really can’t afford to loose any more as she will be below 7 stone.  Also she lives alone & wants to return home after first treatment with no overnight staying with us or me staying with her, what If she’s so unwell is the night? Such a worrying time, I don’t know what to do for the best.

Hi Alison, sorry to hear about your mum.  I have stage 3 ovarian cancer and also had major surgery last year plus 8 cycles of chemo.  I live on my own too but one of my sons stayed with me for the first week of each chemo.  I really would advise your mum to have someone with her for at least a few days after chemo.  Generally the first week is rubbish, the second week you start to improve, then feel better during the third week.

    Sending hugs

    Hi Alison

Its a pleasure.  I wish I’d known more what to expect beforehand.  Don’t be surprised if your mum has memory problems and confusion temporarily,  nicknamed as “chemo brain” it happens.  She will probably lose her appetite and get very tired.

I was really worried when I had my first cycle but kept trying to remember that chemo was my friend as it was trying to make me better.

Do hope your mum gets on ok.  You stay strong too

    Carole xx
