Hello everyone,
My mum has recently been diagnosed with ovarian cancer (advanced incurable), and she is struggling with ascites.
She has had several drains, but the fluid keeps returning. She won’t be starting chemotherapy until 15th January, so her symptoms won’t be alleviated for some time yet.
A paramedic has mentioned water tablets, but these haven’t been prescribed. I’ve also read about a shunt, and this also hasn’t been offered as an option to my mum.
Has anyone else been in a similar situation? I just want to help my mum feel more comfortable.
Thank you all x
I also have ascites . Incredibly uncomfortable I had a drain and they took off 7 litres of fluid . I was told low salt diet , try to sleep sitting up , . I wasn’t offered water tablets but I know someone with prostate cancer who was . A shunt is no good if you are having chemo as it is an open wound . Similarly after a drain you have to wait for the wound to heal before chemo.
love to your mum know how she feels
Xx
Hi OscarB,
Sorry to hear that you’re going through the same. Thank you for your advice-I’d read somewhere about low salt diet (my mum is terrible for adding salt to everything! ), so she’s trying to avoid foods high in salt, now.
After speaking to my mum earlier, the doctor has prescribed steroids to help with the discomfort. Hopefully this should make things slightly better until she starts her chemo.
Love to you-I hope you’re able to find relief from it xx
Hi Ruby,
Really sorry to hear your mum is suffering with her ascites. In addition to cutting down on salt, other things I’ve found helpful are cutting out dairy and gluten, both of which are difficult to digest and play a big part in bloating.
Hope this is useful, and hope your mum is able to get some relief.
love to you both,
Bx
Hi B,
Thank you for the advice-I’ll be ordering some gluten/dairy free options for Mum to try. I would have never thought about cutting gluten and dairy, so I’m eager to let my mum know that it may help her to feel better.
I’m glad you’ve been able to find relief, too x
Thanks Ruby,
There’s quite a lot of nice dairy/gluten free options around these days, and I hope you manage to find some that your mum will enjoy and that will also make her feel more comfortable. I’m not sure how mobile your mum is, but for me I did also find that it helped not sitting still for too long at a time.
Much love to you both,
Bx
I was drained of ascites three times before I started my chemo in February and then it gets reabsorbed into your body , I finished 6 cycles of carboplatin and paclitaxel in June and after a scan late November , the cancer has started to grow again , so I have had the first of six cycles of carboplatin only , have been told I won’t Lose my hair this time , however I started with urinary tract infection and it was extremely painful , am now on antibiotics and feeling much improved , my next chemo is mid January and if my cancer reacts to it talk of maintenance with parp inhibitors of which one is Noraparib and there is olapsrib , I waited a month after my third drainage of six litres to start chemo , hope all goes well for your mum , do keep us posted .
Hello all.
Mam had her last chemo session yesterday. She has reacted well, and she will start maintenance therapy in a few weeks.
I’m anxious for the future, but grateful that Mam is feeling better than a few months ago.
All I can do is hope that she has a good quality of life for as long as possible I love her so much.
I hope you are all well. Thank you for your well wishes and support xxx
So pleased to hear that your mam is much better . She will be well looked after as I am, treatments are advancing and improving all the time. After my last message , after the urinary tract infection I had a blocked ureter and had to have a stent put in and was in hospital for ten days, so my chemo was stopped , however am now back on track and it will finish at the end of May , then maintenance will be the next consideration . I am feeling very well at the moment and am I have regular bloods to monitor my kidneys, so far so good . I wish your mam well in her cancer journey . Let me know how she gets on in the future .
Hi Ruby,
So glad to hear that your mum has responded well to chemo, is feeling better in herself, and that there is maintenance therapy lined up for her.
The maintenance options are amazing these days, and with new research and drug options coming along all the time, I hope you’ll both have lots of quality time to look forward to in the future.
I’ve just completed cycle 5 of 6 of my chemo. Still trying to stay positive (even on the not-so-good days), and looking forward to this summer being better than last winter.
All the best to you and your mam,
Bxx
