Hi,

I am a GP whose friend was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The cancer is located throughout the whole abdomen. Specifically for my friend I am looking for the best surgeon in ovarian cancer. I have done some digging in my network and came up with a few names who have a good reputation for ovarian cancer surgery. This type of surgery is called 'ultra radical surgery'. The names I have so far are from all across the country, but none of them are near Leicester. Maybe someone has other good suggestions,  I do not even know if any of them work privately or NHS but the names I have so far are:

Mr. Balega, surgeon Pan-Birmingham Gynaecological Cancer Centre - Birmingham

Mrs Fotopoulou, surgeon Hammersmith - London

Mr. Naik, surgeon Queen Elizabeth - Gateshead

Mr. Barton, surgeon Royal Marsden - London

Mr. de Jong, surgeon St. James's University Hospital - Leeds

Mr. Helm, surgeon Royal Cornwall Hospital - Truro

Mr. Edmondson, surgeon St. Mary's Hospital - Manchester

Any good experiences with ovarian cancer surgeons? I am sure there must be some more.

  • Hi Dana,

the royal marsden generally always gets a good reputation on the site through the different gynaecology groups. I had TAH & BSO for womb cancer at my local non specialist hospital so can't be much use for referrals but I can maybe point you to some other useful resources whilst you wait for other replies, the eve appeal has a gynaecologist nurse specialist and the others have information lines too that can hopefully help.

    Ovacome - https://www.ovacome.org.uk

    The eve appeal - https://eveappeal.org.uk/supporting-you/ask-eve/

best of luck for your search, I hope that you can find a good local specialist for your friend.

    Lots of love

Ahmad Saynasay was my surgeon at St Thomas hosp.  I  can't recomend him highly enough. Really friendly and down to earth.  Removed my 20cm tumour intact,  so no further treatment as yet.  He specialises in ultra radical surgery and OC. I've healed very well with no complications.

Mr. Burbos surgeon Norfolk and Norwich University is also highly recommended.

We have done some research on the plasma-jet. In fact, a lot of hospitals do use it in ovarian cancer: Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, Royal Marsden London, St James's University Hospital Leeds, and Queen Elizabeth Gateshead just to name a few. I presume there would be more

    Hi,

My surgeon was Dr Amudha Thangavelu at St James Hospital Leeds. She is wonderful and my recovery at St James brilliant. I had Stage 2a Fallopian cancer. Wishing your friend a full and speedy recovery.

    Hi Twink333

I see you had a 20cm tumour removed successfully. Do you mind me asking if it was cancerous or benign and what was your CA125 score? I'm on the radar but not been formally diagnosed as yet and trying to get some comparisons to others in the same position.

Be good to hear from you.

    Thanks

    Kay

Hi Kay, my ca125 was 1010 before surgery. It was diagnosed as stage 1A endometriod cancer, so I had no chemo after surgery and a year on my ca125 is 14. Happy to answer any questions you have and fully understand the sheer panic you feel at the start of this journey. It gets better once you know what you are dealing with. I googled to hell and back,  not to be recommended,  but I guess we all do it. Good luck and keep in touch.x

    Hi

Thank you for responding. It is just so puzzling as I feel fine (not ill at all) yet I know I have this CA125 of 12000 (now 8600) looming over me. Anyway, see consultant tomorrow for results of CT scan.

Part of me is confident nothing will be found (because I feel so well), then I feel it must be hopeless with such a ridiculously high score.

Mixed emotions but the waiting is the worst - be glad to know either way so I can just get on with the next stage - whatever that may be.

    Kay xx

I had radical surgery in may with Dr Fotopoulou for stage 4 ovarian cancer which I couldn't get from my local health board. After 2 more chemotherapy sessions am now on avastin. Unfortunately had to go private and it was expensive .impressed with Dr Fotopoulou's skill and post op interest. Only time will tell if this has been effective in the long run but we thought it was worth a go.

do wish your friend all the best with hard decision making
