Alternative to Carboplatin after allergic reaction?

Hi I was diagnosed with stage 2b ovarian cancer after debunking operation.   Although all visible tumors were removed, I was advised to go on chemo therapy with combination of carboplatin and pacitaxol.    After session 2 I developed a severe allergic reaction.   The doctor has now recommended Cisplatin, however, as I only have 1 kidney, wondering if anyone has had Cisplatin and what the effects of the drug were on the kidney?

  • Hi

I’m sorry to read you had an allergic reaction to your chemo-I had cervical cancer but did have Cisplatin chemo. It is known to be hard on the kidneys, and they do monitor your kidney function carefully as part of checking you are able to cope with the treatment. This will be even more important for you I imagine with one kidney.

I did ok on Cisplatin, but couldn’t manage all the sessions due to my bloods though my kidneys remained ok at the time. Have you talked through potential kidney issues with your doctor and the implications the Cisplatin might have? Sometimes you can try chemo and if it’s too damaging they can stop it, and it would be good to chat it through to see if this is an option so at least you can give it a try.
