Hi. My mum got diagnosed with overian cancer stage four in December. She has been told she also has fluid on her lungs. Mum starts chemotherapy next week, hoping she will have 3 sessions then have a full hysterectomy followed by more chemotherapy. My concern is how week she is. She can hardly walk up the stairs with feeling out if breath, I'm assuming that's due to the fluid. Is that likely to change once she has chemotherapy? I just can't see how she will stay positive when she is struggling to move around the house. No body has mentioned draining the fluid, should we be asking about this as an option?
Thanks xx
Hi Bentley 51,
I think the chemo should help reduce the fluid. Hopefully someone who has direct experience of it working will answer. Chemo didn't work on my cancer or my fluid. I did have some fluid drained from my lung when I was in hospital as doctors were desperately trying to increase my oxygen levels (sats) so they could discharge me. It only eased my breathing for a couple of days as the fluid quickly returned and I was in excruciating pain for about 24 hours afterwards. In the end they sent me home with an oxygen machine. I also had blood clots on my lungs and my breathing only got better when my blood thinning medication started to dissolve the clots.
If your mum is really concerned about her breathing maybe she could contact her GP. There may be something they can do to help her until the chemo starts.
Sarah
Morning Bentley, sorry to hear about your mum. I’ve had both breast & ovarian cancer and wanted to say two things. I’d suggest calling the oncologist in charge of your mothers care as GP’s don’t have the specialist knowledge required when dealing with complications around chemo. Also, chemo is tough on the body and the mind. Reducing fluid can only help. There may be something in place but you need to get advice from oncology re what that is. Very best of luck. x
Thank you my mum was taking into hospital yesterday and still there they have put her on antibiotics but not said much more. Thanks again
