Hi guys

I finished treatment in September and last week had the follow up with my consultant and scan were all positive and all my bloods were except for Vitamin D. Which we are are treating with supplements.

But this morning I got the letter from my consultant and it has upset me today as he has now a concern that my neutrophil count is low at 1.4. During my whole 6 months of treatment and before I stated chemo it was always around d 1.65/1.7.

I have always been a very positive person and excepted the cancer and that it was a life of management but today when I read this after a hard 6 months it has just thrown me.

Anyone else felt like this and had results that weren't what you had hoped?

  • Hi again Debbie  sorry that you have received this random letter……. unfortunately these things happen post treatments……

Some consultants tend to highlight everything to cross the Ts and dot the Is…… but some consultants won’t bother if there is nothing to be concerned about.

This has happened to me many times post my various treatments over my 24 years.

I am now 8 years out from my last treatment and my neutrophil count regularly sits below the lower range of 2.0…… it’s just how my immune system has settled down and I just get in with living with this.

Was the letter just for information or was there an action on it…… like a “re-test in x weeks/months”?

    ((hugs))

  • Thank you for your reply. Yes in 2 months but I'm just very disappointed I guess that things are nit normal. Could the very low Vitamin D perhaps affect it at all?

I have put a call in for tomorrow to speak to my doctor .

  • Hi Debbie

As you know I’ve got the same cancer as you. It’s so upsetting when you think you are doing so well and then something like this hits you. Have you got a cold, cough or any kind of infection cos that can affect your bloods. As Mike said has the consultant said something needs doing or is it just a letter letting you know. Wonder why he didn’t notice at your appointment.
Id ring and ask to speak to him for clarification. I know it’s easy for me to say but try not to worry. If he was really concerned he wud have called you in.

  • Putting the call in is the best thing to do…… I often had this happen just before Christmas Rolling eyes

  • Hi Cattie

I had seen him and the bloods were all good except the Vitamin D. He rang the next day to say that they hadn't covered all the blood tests and he wanted more done. We knew the Vitamin D was very low and have addressed this. The chest xray was clear and the second set of blood tests were also all good. It was just in the letter he had raised the point that they were low at 1.4. First I had heard of it and that's why it throw me. We have just been away to London celebrating the fab results .

I guess it just made me come to earth with a big bang after a fab week.

I have no cold nothing I'm feeling well. So that's why I was so surprised!

Thank you for your reassuring words.

  • Hi Mike

My consultant is now on leave and that's why I rang my doctor.  I want to make sure I have some antibiotics at home because last Christmas holidays I ended up in the hospital because I had leukopenia. So just want to cover myself.

    Thank you

  • Ah right I can see why you are so concerned after ending up in A&E last year. I do think he wud have called you in if he was worried. Two months wud suggest he’s not concerned.

Try and put it to the back of your mind and enjoy your Christmas this year. Xxx

  • Good plan - ad I said I live with low counts so I actually have emergency antibiotics on the shelf that J can take at any time and can get them replaced on repeat prescription without talking with my GP.
