Undiagnosed but worried

Hello, I’m at a loss.

My GP mentioned myeloma, I’d never heard of it. My symptoms started with strange side pain to begin with and now across lumbar region..  I’ve been down the Kidney/bladder cancer road, all clear so back to GP care.
I’ve had clear blood & urine tests, no Bence Jones present, I was told 80% of people would have this present.  Satisfactory and normal results for Serum protein Electrophoresis.  In fact everything has been good so far.  Last couple of days heavy feeling in both legs which feel a bit shaky and like they might give way.     I may be paranoid, it may be a back issue causing this.  Is there another test I should try to get, I can’t just go and have my bone marrow checked out.   Every time it’s just been another pain killer.    Been seven weeks since this started.   I don’t have private insurance so relying on NHS.    Any advice welcome.  Thank you.

  • Verity V,

On average, a GP will come across a patient with myeloma only a couple of times in their working lifetime. I mean no offence to GPs in saying that it is therefore out of their league.

You could ask the GP for a referral to a haematologist. This could well mean more blood tests but at least you will then now where you stand.

The only symptom that I had was bleeding, generally from my ears, nose and throat. After appointments with an ENT specialist that proved to be useless, I figured out myself that the other common link was the blood. I therefore asked for a haematologist referral, and the rest is history.

  • Hi

I was referred to haematologist by GP

was then diagnosed and had it confirmed after bone marrow biopsy.

    • I was attending dr with back pain said it was  sciatica after 12cweeks finally got a blood test next day was told to get to hosp where some bone marrow .was taken  and result was myloma
  • Was it a particular blood test that showed it?  I’ve had so many and wonder if it’s one I’ve not had.   I might have to pay for a private test from somewhere.

  • It was just a normal blood test when I went to hosp ii had fractures in my back due to the myloma you should get a blood test via your dr on nhs
