Hi I am new to the group and am full time carer for my husband whom is 75.  My husband is on cycle 6 of his treatment and is in remission.  Can any of you recommend a travel insurance group that’s reasonable please!

  • Hi and welcome to the forum.

I am unable to recommend an insurance provider but, someone I met during one of my treatment days said they’d used a company called Insurancewith. This company provides holiday insurance for those with medical conditions.
Also, Macmillan can provide a list of companies providing holiday insurance; they cannot give recommendations though.
    Hope this helps.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Deb 63, congratulations on your husband reaching remission ! That's really good news for both of you . My journey is a little different to your husband, had 4 cycles of treatnent followed by a Stem Cell Transplant in 2023 .I'm 70, my husband is 77 and has heart problems.

My husband and I wanted to travel to visit family in Australia for Christnas last year . We went round the houses for insurance, finally settled in Good To Go . It wasn't cheap , but we acknowledged it was probably going to be our last trip out there owing to length of journey and our health issues .

To be honest we always think that the quality of the insurance only shows its true colours when you need to use it .Thankfully we were both well for the whole trip .

The hefty price was reflected by the fact we stayed for 5 weeks .If you are thinking of a shorter holiday you will prob find price more acceptable.  I had a fitness to travel letter from my consultant which helped.

Wishing you both all the best, we don't regret our trip one little bit and it has made ne realise how fortunate I am for all the tremendous care and treatment I have had . X Sue

  • Hi  and welcome to the group.

I have been on my journey with 2 rare, hard to treat types of T-Cell Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma’s (one incurable) and I can testify as to how difficult it can be at times to get affordable Travel Insurance.

I personally had to be over 2 years in remission and not on any cancer related treatments for my type of incurable blood cancer before I could get any price (and that was with my consultant saying I was clear to fly a good 18 months before)……. but these decisions are often all down to individual cases, cancer types, treatment, prognosis and the resulting risk factor put on by the insurers risk assessment.

Comparison sites tend to use the same algorithms so getting a clear price can be difficult and it’s not that unusual to be turned down or told to call the insurers.

It is actually more effective to do a general online search then call a few insurers directly as this means that you have answered all the questions correctly and in doing this a suitable policy can be offered and price given.

Full disclosure is always advisable as in the event of you developing any issues this can reduce the risk of an insurance companies wriggling out from paying out.

I was never able to get cover excluding my cancer in the first 5 years post treatment…… but now being over 5 years out from my last treatment I am classed as cured…… but my first Lymphoma diagnosis in 1999 is incurable - insurance is a minefield.

My latest insurance was through PayingTooMuch, the price was ok but I can’t comment about hoe good they would be in the event if a claim as we did not need to do this.

If you follow the link below……

       Travel insurance

……. it will take you to our dedicated Travel Insurance group, then have a look at the ongoing discussion thread called Members recommended travel insurance as it's where the majority of recommendations from other group members can be found.

I do hope you can get cover.

  • This year, we have used Insurancewith. I am 66, my husband is 68.
I am in remission, following second line of treatment in January 2023.
My husband was treated for oesophageal cancer last year. We both have a couple of minor ailments as well.
Annual insurance for the pair of us, for a year, was just over £600 , with a large excess (£500)

I agree with Cakie, you only know how good the insurance company is when you put in a claim.
Also a must to declare everything and if you’re unsure about anything, ‘phone someone from the company.
