Hi I am new here, my dad was diagnosed with myeloma in October last year, had chemo for 4 months and then had a 12 hour operation on his spine to have rods fitted In February, was given the all clear end of march. By the end of April he was back in hospital and we were being told to expect the worse as he was so ill, his cancer was back, 5 weeks later he is home after making a great recovery,

Dad needs platelet transfusions every other day as they are still very low, which he has to go to hospital for, is anybody else having this sort of treatment.

I still can't get my head around the fact my dad was fit and well this time last year, he was not one to sit down always on the go, now he spends his day laying in bed as he finds it painful to stand or sit to long, and he seems to have aged over night. Feel like I gave lost part of my dad.

  • Hi Hengi,

Welcome to the forum, although I am really sorry to read about how your Dad is doing. Blood transfusions can be very normal with myeloma as sometimes the blood needs a bit of a boost after fighting the myeloma cells. I’m really sorry to read that you feel like you’ve lost part of your Dad, myeloma and its treatment can be so rough, but he is definitely still your Dad in there. It is great that he has responded well in the past few weeks, that can often be the case with myeloma and let’s hope that he continues to do really well going forward as well. I have come across very many really poorly people with myeloma who have managed to regain themselves once the treatment gets on top of the myeloma cells, so let’s hope your Dad will experience this as well.

Sending you loads of positive wishes,

    Greg
