Food tastes disgusting

Hi,

It has been nearly 2 moths since I had my high dose chemo and stem cell transplant, it was rough in the hospital but the worst thing which is really affecting my well being it is the food's taste, which is absolutely vile, can't find words to describe it.

At one point I couldn't even drink water, only ice chips and tonic water, then it was slowly getting a bit better, I could eat tomatoes, olives, salmon and almonds, then all of a sudden a week ago, it all went back to square one, except for water, I can't eat nothing taste good or at least no bad, no even the nutritional shakes.

I'm despairing, weak, feel exhausted, I force myself to eat some almonds and tomatoes but can't keep like this much longer.

Has anyone experience such a set back taste wise? If so how long it took you to recover and enjoy food again.

Thank you for taking the time to read this nonsense.

Take care you all

Xx

  • Hi Sonia

I am really sorry to read about the eating problems you are having at the moment. Whilst I have never had problems with taste, I did have to go nil by mouth for a month after SCT so I do understand how utterly debilitating it can be when you are not eating properly. One thing that helped me was “mindless eating”. This is the process of making eating a mechanical exercise - ie, not thinking about it, eating in front of the tv whilst watching a favourite programme for example - anything you can do so you don’t build up the process in your mind. It might not help with taste but it will hopefully ensure you continue to get nutrients into your body and I’m really hoping that over time your body starts to get back to normal - it can take several months after SCT for equilibrium to return, and so I’m really hoping that it won’t be too long into the future for you.

    All the best

    Greg

  • Some food does taste bad or tasteless but it's a process of discovering what remains palatable.
