Hi
My Dad has recently been diagnosed with mesothelioma and it’s a complete shock as he’s gone from being fit and healthy cycling up to 40 miles a week to being absolutely exhausted, breathless, he’s lost weight, and he looks so unwell. My dad has never been ill so it’s so tough seeing him like this, and I feel so helpless!!
We saw the last oncologist today he was amazing and said my dad can start chemotherapy straight away, he said that the treatment can ‘buy you’ a few more months of life!!
How long have you or your loved ones lasted on chemotherapy? I’ve been doing some research and people have lasted up to 3 years I hope we have that time if not longer with my dad!!
Hey, they gave my dad 12months with treatment or 9 months without. He went for the treatment and the 1st round of chemo perked him right up, gave him a new lease of life. He then started a trial drug and declined. He managed 10months. Everyone is different though. My friends uncle refused all treatment and he's fit, if not a little breathless at times but still going about his daily life after 6 years! I have everything crossed for you all x
Thank you for responding I’m really hoping that chemotherapy perks my dad up, he’s absolutely exhausted at the moment and fed up because of this as he’s always been so active!
Sorry to hear about your dad Xx
My husband was diagnosed with it last September. It's a real shock, isn't it. He, too, was very fit - a keen walker, DIYer, very involved with amateur drama, etc. He was lucky (I think) to be offered the MARS2 clinical trial, for which he was the last person recruited, as it has now closed. He's currently struggling with the aftermath of surgery (see my notes on the "discussions" section), but we're hoping he'll start to recover more soon, then continue with 4 more rounds of chemotherapy which is included in the trial. However, the oncologist has told us that there are always further trials you can get onto, further down the line, but also that recently, immunotherapy has finally been accepted as a standard further treatment which can follow chemotherapy. It may in due course be something useful for your dad?
We just have to try to keep thinking positively, and do what we can. Good luck!
