My wife has had a dark mole on her cheek for quite a while and recently, this has become darker and slightly more raised so she was referred to a dermatologist who she saw today. He "didn't like the look" of it so has told her that she will need to have a biopsy in the next 4 weeks and await the results.
I am worried and not sure if 4 weeks is normal to wait or not? Her previous assessment via an e appointment indicated sebbhorric keratosis (excuse the spelling).
Any advice is welcome.
Thanks.
Hi Lee A and a very warm welcome to the group which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I've had 2 moles removed, one which turned out to be melanoma, and one which didn't. The first mole was removed about 6 weeks after referral and turned out to be a melanoma and the second one was removed after about 4 weeks and was an atypical mole. So yes up to 4 weeks is quite normal.
If your wife is able to take a short notice cancellation she could phone dermatology appointments and let them know. She might then get her operation sooner.
Wishing you both all the best and fingers crossed that it's just an atypical mole.
Thanks Latchbrook, really appreciate the reply. My concern is that from what I read, melanoma is aggressive and even weeks can make a difference? Her mole hasn't really changed in size, just thickened and darkened but I still worry.
Hi Lee A
It's natural to assume the worst and think that your wife's melanoma might spread in the few weeks between her consultation and having it removed but, in reality, most melanoma are slow growing. Also, try not to jump the gun because at the moment you don't even know whether this mole is melanoma or not. It could just as easily be an atypical mole.
((hugs))
