Hi, I have just had my first surgery for suspected nodular malignant melanoma. The full lesion was removed from my neck - it was large. I now have a 4 to 6 week wait for the histology results. I’m beside myself with fear and anxiety. I just feel like every moment there could be secondaries growing that should be treated.
I would really welcome and appreciate advice and experience on how to get from here to the results day without imploding or from anyone with nodular melanoma on treatments as I feel like if that’s what it is then that’s it for me. I just feel overwhelmed and under informed and don’t want to google anymore as I’m finding it petrifying. Thank you so much.
Hi Lottie10 and a very warm welcome to the melanoma group which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
Just to give you some context, I was diagnosed with an amelanotic melanoma 8 years ago and had to wait 6 weeks for the results.
I found that filling my time doing things that I enjoyed helped me spend less time worrying about the 'what ifs'. Lots of people find mindfulness really useful and, if this is something that interests you, clicking here will take you to the NHS page about it.
You are right to avoid Dr Google as you'll only end up down rabbit holes, reading out of date information and generally frightening yourself. After all, no one ever goes on Google to report good news only bad news.
If the lesion does turn out to be melanoma then, depending on the depth of the melanoma, you might only require a follow-up procedure called a wide local excision (WLE) and the optional sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB). I've had both these procedures so happy to chat through what's involved.
Hopefully you'll be back here in 6 weeks time telling us that the lesion wasn't a melanoma but, in the meantime, try to remember that no amount of worrying will change the outcome but it will ruin the present.
((hugs))
Anne
Hi Lottie10.
As Latchbrook has said, worrying is the easiest thing to do, but is also a total waste of time and emotional energy until you have the histology results.
I know it's easier said than done, but please try to live your life as normally as possible in the intervening period. Many people who have posted on here have been convinced they have melanoma, only to find out that that isn't the case. Hopefully that will be you too!
If the results aren't good, please don't despair. The latest treatments are wonderful - I'm Stage 4 (the melanoma had spread from my scalp to my liver and lungs), however after the completion of my immunotherapy treatment, the cancer is not present, and I'm in remission.
I'm very positive - I'm living a normal life - plenty of exercise, feeling good and taking every day as it comes.
Whatever the histology results, please don't despair. Be positive, knowing that nowadays, melanoma is on the back foot and we have the tools to give it a damn-good run for its money.
All the best, and fingers crossed for a good result from your biopsy.
Hello lotti, sorry to find you are on here but so glad you signed up. Best not to visit Google, but so many of us have
Try and keep life as calm as you can, eat, sleep. Do you have hobbies? If talking helps, there is this site but also, you can access people to talk to on the phone through this site and the Maggie Centres.
I find I can’t sleep as well as I’d like, when I’m waiting on scan results, so I cook, now it’s called batch cooking because I can keep going and it fills the freezer - and other folks!
I truly hope it’s good news you get but keep in mind, if it isn’t the best, take hope from emo bham, which is what I’ve done reading their story this morning, absolutely incredible what can be done for melanoma. You can click on my profile to see where I’m at, and I’ll be aiming for where emo bham is - amazing result.
Let us know how you get on xx
