Hi my story starts a few weeks ago.
A mole I have on my chest started bleeding on checking it I could see it had changed becoming lumpy and black. I made an appointment with my GP the same day. She took one look at it and sent an urgent referral. 2 weeks later I attended an appointment at the dermatology clinic. A nurse took my details and examined the mole, she left the room and came back with the consultant who took a look and said we will remove that today. She the looked my other moles and identified another for removal. I was told to come back in afternoon. Both moles were removed. I asked for an opinion based of what she saw. The reply was you have melanoma , what was said next took me by surprise, I should prepare for the worst. That comment has left me sick with worry. My perception of worst case scenario is just that.
In terms of exposure to sun and sunburn, I have never actually sunbathed but my top has been removed in the sun occasionally, but I have never suffered sun burn. The other mole that was identified as melanoma is high up on my inner thigh an area that has never seen sunlight.
Hi Scotland63, I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been told to prepare for the worst, I’m not clear what that meant to your dermatologist or to you, but I’m thinking at this stage it’s simply a preparation of having a melanoma versus not having a melanoma. Welcome to the group where we all experience anxiety at some times, me included, my story so far is in my profile that you can reach by clicking on my user name or photo.
Your diagnosis will only really come when the biopsy results come back from pathology and get talked through with you. I don’t know if that helps though as sometimes the uncertainty is worse than when you have the results and know what’s going to happen next. You say you are sick with worry, and that’s very understandable, it takes time to feel comfortable that you have a diagnosis but today and now you are ok, and there is still a lot of hope ahead.
Thinking positive though we have had people posting on here previously where there consultant dermatologist thought it was a melanoma but when the results came back it wasn’t, so I hope that’s your scenario, or that you can have some comfort in the fact that it’s already been removed and you didn’t have the wait for that surgery that some have had on here.
Did they say how long it would be before you get your results?
Have they given you a contact number of a specialist nurse to chat through anything?
Do you have any questions for anyone in the group here?
Thank you for taking time to reply. I will click and read your bio. I will also complete mine in the coming days. I was directed to the site by a close friend who was diagnosed with a different type of cancer many .ago
i naturally have a positive outlook on life being very happy and content with my life, but i have never faced any sort health issue never mind a cancer diagnosis. It’s been 5 days since the consultant said I have melanoma, so I realise waiting for results will be a bit of a roller coaster ride of emotions. Speaking on here has already been a release for me,
My family situation means i have only told a few plus one close friend. If it is positive news then I will have saved many from worrying.,If it isn’t then I will deal with that if it happens.
To answer your questions
I have been told 4 to 6 weeks for biopsy results.
I haven’t been given any contact number.
Questions nothing specific yet. I am still finding my way round the site.
Again thanks for your reply.
Hi thanks for doing your profile, I just had a peek, glad you’ve enjoyed the musical and have stuff planned for your 4-6 week wait.
It’s a shame they didn’t give you a number, I suppose some will have had it on a referral letter which you didn’t get as they did the excision there and then. This Macmillan site has a support line 0800 808 0000 that might be of help as well as messages to people on the forum. Sometimes someone who has your records is what’s needed so I hope the general hospital switchboard is able if needed to find the right person for you if those pesky results are delayed. Good to put results thoughts on the pending pile while you concentrate on the musicals and other nice things now pile.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
