Going out in the sun

Since having a melanoma stage 1 removed from my forearm last year I am absolutely terrified of going out in the sun. I use factor 50 and have bought hats and cover up clothing from Solaris, but I am terrified to let the sun touch my skin anywhere. Do I have to be this careful?

  • I'm never quite sure, does it mean we are meant to stay indoors 11-3? And outside of those hours can go out but stay in shade, cover up etc. Or can I go out 11-3 too if I cover up/ stay in shade? I'm going to Cornwall with friends soon and they have boat trips and stuff planned so I'm not fully sure what is ok to do? Thanks!

  • Hi

The recommendation about "staying out of the sun during the strongest time of the day (11am to 3pm) between April and October inclusive in the UK and in all months of the year in any other part of the world" doesn't mean that you can't go outside.

If you go outside during that time then you should stay out of the sun, ie sit in the shade if you can. However, I'm a keen walker and it's sometimes impracticable to avoid walking during that time.

If I'm going to be walking between 11am and 3pm then I make sure that I'm covered, wear a hat and regularly reapply F50 sunscreen to exposed areas like my face, back of hands, etc. You could do the same on your boat trips, etc.

I hope you have a lovely time in Cornwall Slight smile

  • Brilliant, that's reassuring to know, thank you. I was worrying about being a party pooper, but I feel better now! I'm bringing long sleeve UPF tops and trousers, hats and sunglasses so will keep covered up, find shady spots wherever possible, but not get too anxious about it all! And factor 50 will be in my bag at all times! RoflThank you so much.
