Dear all,

Just over one week ago I went for a wide excision (1cm around) for stage 1A myeloma on my neck. The surgeon did a 2 week sick note which I initially thought was not needed and felt guilty about, particularly around Christmas. However the site is so tender particularly if I turn quickly. I generally make phone calls all day, but just wondered what other people's experience of work absence following a wide excision was?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to our corner of the online community.

I had my WLE 9 years ago now but didn't have to decide when to go back to work as I'd already stopped working.

While you're waiting for replies you might find this information from Macmillan on work and cancer useful. It has a section on returning to work and also what reasonable adjustments you can ask your employer for to help you return to work.

It would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi Rebecca,

I had a wide excision on my calf and I definitely had a few weeks off work even though I mostly work sitting down (I'm a lecturer). I think I also felt like you that maybe it wasn't necessary but looking back it was necessary. I'd trust the surgeon. They have experience of these things. It's better to take the time to heal completely rather than go back to work and be a bit poorly and then have to take more time off if it doesn't heal. It's quicker that way. I hope you feel better soon.

    Best,
