Hi, am newly diagnosed (March 2023) melanoma in situ, Stage 0. Due to have initial appointment this week to discuss treatment plan, dermatologist has explained that this will be a WLE. I have been quite pressured at work to get this done asap in order to minimise disruption; the hospital has said today the WLE will likely be end of May, if not later.
My question is, is there a 'window' to do the WLE? Initial biopsy done March 1. Am concerned this may need to be done sooner rather than later?
Also, a further question to anyone who has been in this position: I have had more moles looked at since the initial biopsy, one in particular I thought looked 'different'. Irregular border, not symmetrical. Have no idea if it has changed as have not been very vigilant regarding moles ( but am now, obviously am quite worried). Dermatologist said she did not feel it was in my best interests to have more removed, as I have had massive anxiety waiting for biopsy results. She has also said they did not meet the criteria for removal. This was sort of reassuring, but has anyone ever asked for a second opinion? Does anyone know what the criteria for mole removal is? Feel like my life is on hold until I can get the WLE done and any other dodgy moles removed.
Appreciate I am 'lucky' the mole was found at this early stage, however, I do not mind admitting I have found the whole process extremely stressful.
Thanks,
Hi Edwina and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I don't think there's any set timeframe in which a WLE has to be done after the initial excision biopsy. I had my original excision in mid-October, received my melanoma diagnosis at the end of November, then had my WLE in February, so about 4 months after the excision biopsy.
I think a lot depends upon the availability of the surgeons. Some people get their surgery only a couple of weeks after they have had their results while others report not having the WLE for a couple of months afterwards.
It would be great if you could pop something about your diagnosis and treatment so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

Hi I had my biopsy done on the 7th March and I'm getting my WLE (hopefully) on the 18th April. I am having it done at a local surgery which does minor operations - I had my mole removed there. The wait to have it done at the hospital (where my nurse recommended I should have it done) was a lot longer. As it would be the same doctor at both places I decided I preferred the shorter rather than longer wait.
Hi I had my original melanoma removed end of October and the WLE on 11th January.I am using the Miiskin app to keep an eye on my moles in between my 3l monthly dermatology checks. It is a really stressful and anxious experience I know.
I have found it has got a little easier now that the amount of hospital appointments has died down a little bit and I feel I can have a little bit of ordinary life in between all the checks and appointment, I am having immunotherapy as well now.A lovely dermatology nurse said to me that in this situation we have to accept we have a new normal which I realise is now true.I hope you have family and friends who are supporting you.Good luck as you move forward.
Just a quick update, I was lucky to be offered a cancellation appointment for my WLE and have had it done this morning. It went very well, the team at The Christie Hospital, Manchester were fantastic and I was very well supported. Taking it easy for the next 2 weeks, fingers crossed for good results to follow.
Hi Edwina, I'm also due to have a WLE and a pre-surgical apt first. Can you pls tell me what number you rang at the Christie to ask to be eligible for any cancellations? I'm horribly anxious about the long wait time even until my pre-surgical apt so this would really help! Thanks and good luck with your recovery and result!
Hi, I think I mentioned it at my pre-surgical appointment and got a phone call around 2 weeks later. Like you, I was really anxious, even though my wait time was only 6 weeks. Good luck with everything, my appointment today went really well and yours will too!
Ok thank you! Can I ask you, on my initial biopsy result it said there was 'an in-situ element at one of the lesion tips' - this is what I'm really worried about progressing after the initial excision of my 1a melanoma. Did your original excision show this in situ element?
Hi, I was told I had melanoma in situ, stage 0 following my original biopsy. That is the only information I was given, and I have not asked for any information from the histology report, mainly because it would likely make my anxiety worse and I am guessing I don't need that information. I am not familiar with the phrase 'in situ element at one of the lesion tips' but I would suggest perhaps having a conversation with the dermatologist who did the biopsy, I am sure they would be happy to clarify further and answer any questions. Good luck!
