Hello I hope everyone is keeping well.
I was diagnosed with a stage 1 melanoma in October and was told I would need a wle which would involve a skin graft by the original nurse. I had my appointment with the plastic surgeon last week and they said rather than having the skin graft they think they will be able to stretch my skin to cover the area that needs removing (so sounds like when I had the biopsy). Has anyone had the wle done like this without the skin graft? I am worried that they are removing a smaller area so my still leave some behind and also as the area is on my ankle it will leave the skin in that area too tight for running.
I thought I would update, had the surgery this morning.
it was done by local. I did have the skin graft, the extra skin was taken from my abdomen. Haven’t actually seen the areas as it’s all covered in bandages (I’m quite a wimp so probably for the best I haven’t seen it lol). The process wasn’t too bad. Hope that helps anyone still waiting for their wle. They said to go back next week to have the areas checked and 4-6 weeks for the results.
Hi Kels13. Good to hear you’ve had it done. I’m waiting for mine. I’m imagining it’s similar to the biopsy but I little more intense. My biopsy scar is on the outer side of my lower leg. My dermatologist didn’t mention a skin graft just that it would be local not general but I’ve been referred to a plastic surgeon.
Thank you so much for the update, I have plenty of spare skin on my abdomen so it’s reassuring that’s where they source a graft ;) How are you feeling? I’m keeping my fingers crossed it’s all clear for you too.
Thank you, hope yours goes well when you have it. The surgeon gave me the choice of abdomen or groin so went for abdomen. It’s pretty sore today, I think yesterday the anaesthetic was still helping as today I can’t put any weight on my foot at all.
today it is a lot worse than I imagined. I think yesterday the anaesthetic was still masking the pain as when I tried to walk today I couldn’t weight bare (mine is on my ankle though). Hopefully when you meet the surgeon they will be able to tell you if they need to do the graft or not, they were trying to do mine without one but it wouldn’t have left my ankle too tight.
Hi. Did the hospital not give you any painkillers? :( I just want the operation over and done with now. Can I please ask you what it was like? I imagine similar to biopsy but longer and a bit more pulling x
Yeah, they prescribed some codine. I didn’t really have any pain yesterday so was only taking 1 every 4 hours but they said if I needed too I was allowed 2 so I’m going to do that today.
Yes, was pretty much like the biopsy. They put local in both areas (they ask if you can feel anything and if you can they can put more in) then they prepped the areas with some cold liquid stuff. On mine they cut the area on my ankle out and then cut the area on my abdomen and stitched that up and then attached it to the ankle. All I could feel really was lots of pulling. I kept my eyes closed the whole time so I don’t actually know what they used to do it all.
hopefully not much longer to wait for you.
Thank you for letting me know. I hope the pain subsides soon for you. I think I’ll be keeping my eyes shut too! I remember when I had my biopsy I held the nurses hand and waffled about my job lol. Can I please ask how long the op took and was you allowed out once you was ok to leave? I want to be in and out as soon as. I hate hospitals. Then again I don’t think many people like them x
I don’t know exactly how long it took as I didn’t have my watch on, maybe about half an hour including them getting all the equipment ready and stuff? I had to be at the hospital at 7.30am. The hospital I went to everyone has their own room so I was put in my room and the nurse came round to do all the observations etc and get me in a gown and do a pregnancy test. Then a little while later the surgeon came round and drew on the areas. After the procedure I had to be wheeled back to my room (felt really strange not being allowed to walk) then they gave me a sandwich and the nurse took my obs again and said I could leave as soon as I felt ready so I got dressed and left about 11am :) they did tell me to bring a book or magazine (you hospital may be different) as everyone arrives at 7.30 and then they work through the list, not sure how they pick the order of who goes first.
