Had PET scan, biopsy, scan with contrast and lung function tests at local hospitals, now waiting for appointment with surgeon. I have been seen by a nurse consultant who has told me I'll have an upper right lobectomy.  No mention yet of chemotherapy or radiotherapy

Anyone here had same or similar experience?

  • Hi Skanky

Sorry you have reason to be on here. I had a similar experience and was diagnosed following xray that was taken during rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis. Found 2.5cm adenocarcinoma upper right lobe and I had a lobectomy in January of this year, I was fortunate enough to not need chemo or radiotherapy and after my next scan in January 2025 if all is well, I will be going on to yearly check ups. Happy to answer any questions if you think it will help.  Good luck, hope all goes well for you x

  • Thank you for your good wishes x

How long were you in hospital? How long was recovery from operation?

  • I was in hospital for 2 days, sent home with chest drain, that was taken out in 2 weeks which I think is much longer than for most people, for some it is removed before discharge. I recovered quite well but I measured my recovery by how well I walked up hills. I am 10 months post op and I feel back to normal, I am back on the golf course, walking every day and I can get up the hills without stopping I just go a bit slower than I did x

  • Hi Bella27, it's me again Slight smile

I had my lobectomy, same as you was discharged with chest drain, hated it! Been told margins and lymph nodes all clear. Had a meeting with oncologist this week who offered 4 cycles of chemotherapy at 3 week intervals for preventative/mop up but he and surgeon don't think I need it, they've left final decision up to me!! What to do??

  • Hi Skanky

It's good to hear from you and I'm so pleased you can put your operation behind you. How do you feel? It's a tricky one with the chemo, if they didn't think you needed it, why did they offer it. Could you maybe have a chat with your macmillan nurse, see what they advise x

  • I feel ok, not had any painkillers for weeks, just a bit uncomfortable and still get quite breathless, had to have 1 dressing changed twice a week until last week - had one little bit that wouldn't completely heal! The oncologist said that he liked to tell patients all the options/risks. I don't have a macmillan nurse but have since spoken to the lung cancer nurse at the hospital. She said that most patients don't have chemo after lobectomy as all risk has been 'taken out'. The cancer and the 2 'other bits' were all in the same lobe. I'm leaning to no chemo as don't want all the side effects that come with it as I feel so much better now (my daughter had chemo after breast cancer and I saw what she went thru) and after listening to the experts. If cancer comes back after the 12weeks it would be treated as a recurrence

  • Hi' Skanky, In 03 I had 80mm bowel removed.  last October I had lower right lung surgery. I haven't had any Chemo or Radio and I'm fine more or less back to my normal self. Good luck

  • I was breathless for quite a while but it got easier and I feel that the only thing I need to now is walk up the hills a bit slower, apart from that, back to normal. I also felt I continued to improve for months after the surgery. My nurse said at 6 months I would be as good as I would get, breathing wise, but I still felt better at 12 months to 6 months. The good thing is you will monitored regularly and should anything show up, hopefully not, treatment would be an option then. I hope you continue to do well in your recovery, big hugs x

  • Thank you for that, I'm very grateful for any advice x

  • Thank you for that information,  I'm grateful for any advice. Think I'm making the decision to not having the chemo and sticking to it, what will be will be x
