Newbie with spickulated tumor in right lung

After feeling breathless for a few months my sister finally persuaded me to go to the doctor and X-ray in November then follow up X-ray 2nd Jan and CT scan a few days later show I have a 1.8cm speculated tumor in right lung. Doctor thinks it is cancer but waiting on pet scan to confirm. Doctor didn’t feel from Ct results that it had spread and felt it was contained and caught early so I feel as lucky as possible at this stage. My question is how often does more cancer show up on pet scan that wasn’t seen on Ct scan. Am I likely to have more in other places? It’s so scary I have small children to care for and the stats for lung cancer are so frightening x

  • Hi there and welcome. I’m not sure there is a definitive answer to your question, but others more knowledgeable than me may chip in.

I found myself in a similar situation with a 17mm spiculated lesion in my right lung.  My doctor thought it was highly likely to be cancer but this wasn’t confirmed until the PET scan which also confirmed that it hadn’t spread.

Respiratory medical staff look at thousands of scans and they are hugely skilled in interpreting images. My doctor also said prior to the PET scan that it looked as if there was no spread but also said that this would not be absolutely confirmed until the results of The PET. So although it’s horrendous having to wait for results that is really the best.  Hang on to your doctor’s positive view while you wait and do your level best to stay away from Google - there is a lot of outdated information and you’ll struggle to find any useful information. I know that all I succeeded in doing was raising my anxiety levels so much that I couldn’t eat, sleep or talk to any of my family. I feel stressed just thinking about those first couple of weeks!

Really sorry you find yourself here, but stick around, people here really are the best. Happy to answer any questions you might have from a personal perspective and I’m sure there are others who will chip in too.

  • Thank you so much for your reply, my scan is on Friday so not much longer for me to feel anxious. The not knowing feels the worst. I have been googling so will try to stop. I think I’ve accepted it’s cancer and I’m just hoping it’s contained and can have the operation to remove although consultant did say recovery time for a 3/4 months for that. Small price to pay if I am then cancer free. Trying to stay positive but sometimes it feels overwhelming so again thank you.

  • You’re very welcome. Cancer is very scary. After all the worst case scenarios I imagined, surgery with curative intent was the plan and I’m cancer free and on 5 year follow up. Hopefully it will be the same for you.
