Hey all, I have had blood test after blood tests because 1of my markers (beginning with a T) for my heart is always higher than it should be. They know I've had heart attacks in the past, I've also had strokes. They have said if this marker doesn't come down I can't have my chemo which is meant to start on Thursday (14th), can they refuse to give me my treatment???

  • Hi   I am sorry to hear this. They can refuse chemo if they think it will make you too unwell. But they will probably look at other treatments instead. Although chemotherapy is one of the main line treatments, there are lots of other treatments that can be just as successful. X

  • Hi Sammie

One of the main side effects of chemo can be a substantial drop in both the red and white blood cells; which can be dangerous for someone with a known history of heart problems and/or strokes.

Chelle is correct, they can and will refuse to give  treatment that they deem will be a significant risk to the patient.   It is why you (and all of us) have to through a barrage of testing ahead of the treatment plan.

If this does happen, ask what other treatments they are looking at for you.

I hope every thing goes well for you on Thursday.

  • Hi Sammie,

Sorry I can't be more helpful regarding treatment, but the marker they're talking about I think will be troponin (ex cardiac nurse here), I hope you get your treatment sorted

  • Well, chemotherapy has been cancelled for tomorrow as they think I have a underlying heart condition that I'm not aware of, another blood test tomorrow then my oncologist and a cardiologist are going to have a meeting to see what is the course of to be done with me. I'm so annoyed with myself for not knowing what is wrong with me.

Heart issues do run in my family on my mom's side, so another week of the waiting game for me xx
