Hi all, I’m male age 59, married and a father of three, I have for the last year been losing weight but was unable to access my G.P. practice, going back some years I suffered some major brain trauma which left me with drug resistant epilepsy, last year I had a few serious seizures which hospitalised me, the doctor in charge decided to do a body scan and found something on my lung, he didn’t say anything to me about it but again I was back in for seizures and the same doctor got a body scan done and next thing a gang of doctors are around me and telling me that a growth in my left lung had grown four fold in three months. I was set back as I didn’t really have a clue about it, I’ve been for the PET scan and been told it is a soft tissue cancerous growth, I still don’t quite understand other than what I have read online, treatment starts next Tuesday.

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

I had a different type of cancer to you but I do understand what a worrying time this will be for you.

I noticed that you said that you "still don’t quite understand other than what I have read online" and I wondered if you'd been assigned a CNS (cancer nurse specialist)? If so could I recommend that you give her a call tomorrow so that she can answer any questions that you might have before your treatment starts on Tuesday.

    Wishing you all the best

  • Hello, I don’t yet have an assigned nurse but my wife and daughter are both nurses, I also have an outreach epilepsy specialist nurse who keeps in touch because my epilepsy is very bad, thank you for taking the time to say hi, I thought I was left hanging and was very close to looking elsewhere for advice.
kind regards and best wishes, Liam.

  • No problem Liam

Let us know how it goes on Tuesday and I'm sure the other group members will be happy to answer any questions you have or share their treatment experiences with you.

  • I saw a CNS, a very nice lady, very informative. I saw her just after I had seen the surgeon, we had a lengthy discussion about treatment, the surgery was atop his list, finding an anaesthetist was a problem but an ego had put himself forward. To find one was a problem as I have major problems with epilepsy, not a day goes by now without a seizure, so they had to find one up to the challenge. My cancer is only in the lower lobe of my left lung ‘thankfully’ and the removal might be the end of it, I can’t say I’m not afraid but find myself reassuring and mopping the tears of my wife of 40 years, the CNS nurse referred me and my wife to come to Macmillan, I know of you but not of the support you might offer, my surgery is in four weeks.

  • Hi Liam

I'm glad to hear your appointment went well and they are looking for a curative outcome with your surgery.

As I had a different type of cancer I don't have any experience with the type of surgery that you'll be having so it might be an idea to start a new post asking for others in the group to share their experiences with you.

Do you know in what capacity your CNS suggested you contact Macmillan as they have all sorts of support to offer? This link takes you to the main page which you could browse to see what's available.

Wishing you all the best with your upcoming surgery.

  • Hi Liam

They found a tumour in my upper left lobe 2 months ago and it was a complete shock. Almost 3 weeks ago I had that whole lobe removed. I was so scared about the operation and how i would be after. The operation went really smoothly, i was in very little pain after and was on my feet the next day. Yes i had good pain medication but the most discomfort was from the chest drain. 5 days after the op i flew home from Southampton to Guernsey. I'm now walking about 2 miles a day, not needing any pain relief, going back to work part-time in a week and can drive again in a week.  My wounds are uncomfortable at night if i lie on them and i do have the odd low moment but am generally doing so so well.

I hope my experience gives you some comfort about the operation and after and good luck. If you have any questions about how i got on, feel free to ask.
