needing support and advice please

  • Hi dee57 and welcome to the group, but sorry you find yourself here.  I’ve not had a pet scan, but I have had a ct scan. The staff are always so nice. A ct scan is like a donut shape, so although you lay on a bed and move into the machine, your head comes through the other side, so you are not enclosed. The medical staff leave the room, but they are watching from the next room, and they can communicate with you. So if you want it to stop at anytime, you can tell them. Do you have an appointment date for these scans yet?

No not yet CT is fine its PET that worries me

  • I believe they are very similar to CT except that you are injected with a radio tracer and have to allow time for your body to react to that. The whole process takes a couple of hours.

I had my Petscan 2 weeks ago and was worried but in all honesty it was fine. Nothing to worry about. I like yourself was worrried but I worried over nowt. I was super bored as they give you the radiation tracer and you are left in a room all alone for 90 minutes for the tracer to do it's job. Boredom was the biggest piss off for me. My phone went flat but in all fairness they gave me  a USB charger so I could carry on talking on Skype to friends.

Hi dee57, please don’t worry.  You are only in the machine for about twenty minutes.  I had the injection in my arm and sat for an hour in a comfy chair before going into the machine.  The only slightly uncomfortable thing was having to lie with my arms folded on top of my head , but other than that I kept my eyes closed and it was soon over.  I think your thoughts of what it is like is worse than the reality

  • MazLC am I right in saying, your head comes through the other side of the machine, so you are not enclosed? Like a CT scan, it’s like going through a donut shaped machine?

Hi Chelle, for about 10-15 mins your head does come out or near the other side - if you put your head back you can see the daylight.  For the last 5 mins your head is inside.  I think it depends what they are scanning.  Funnily enough I found this easier than the ct scan

  • Thank you for that MazLC. Good luck for your results.
Dee57 I hope this helps. The staff are always very reassuring. Tell them before you start that you are feeling anxious. They will be very understanding.
    Good luck x
