Lung cancer

Hi. I’m new on here. I was offered a free lung scan by the NHS cause I have smoked for 45 years (gave up 8 months ago after hubby had a massive heart attack & went into heart failure, he’s still with us & doing well considering) 3 weeks after the scan I got a call to say a shadow was seen on my left lung & would be referred to my local hospital. I’ve had a Lung function test & PET CT Scan & that has shown a tumour & a small shadow ? Lymph node. Had my lung biopsy Tuesday of this week so am now waiting to go back to hospital to get results. I’m 61 & all this has been a really big shock as I never had any systems of anything unusual & I never thought anything would show up on scan. I’m very worried as I have mild  emphysema & worried this could stop me be offered surgery as my dr is 99% sure it’s cancer.

  • It's not unusual for lung cancer to be detected during imaging for something else.  It tends to be asymptomatic in the early stages.

Whether surgery is an option depends on many factors.  I have moderate emphysema and I had a lobectomy in April last year.

When all of the information is in, your case will be discussed at a multi-disciplinary team meeting and the most appropriate treatment for your particular circumstances will be decided.

I know that it's really hard to sit around waiting for a treatment plan, but there's no point in getting ahead of yourself right now.

  • Hiya April1962

It easy to say but not so easy to do, but at this stage try not to stress about the situation. the hardest part is waiting for answers and that can seem like forever. Your case will be referred to a multi disciplinary team and they will decide what options are for treatment, when you next attend the hospital you will be presented with options for treatment and the decision on what to take forward will be yours. If you tap on my avatar you can see my journey so far, I know it's scary at the beginning but it does get easier specially when you know what your facing.

Whilst your waiting for your hospital appointment try and have fun and be happy it's much better for you than worry, which at the moment you don't know what your supposed to worry about. Take each day as it comes and ask questions when you need to, but don't let this dominate you life,

If you want to chat please message hugs for now

  • Hi Lolie. Thank you for your reply. It’s the waiting for this appointment that’s the hardest as the uncertainty is horrid. I’m trying to be positive & getting on with life. I will go with whatever is recommended as I trust NHS. Fingers crossed x

  • Hi Donna. Thank you for your reply. I have always believed worrying don’t change anything so I’m trying to be positive but this is a hard one! I’m glad after reading your journey that your results are positive. The weather here in the UK is picking up so am trying to enjoy it while it last. It’s all been a shock as I never had any symptoms at all & never thought the scan would show up anything but glad I took up the offer of the free scan so it’s been found earlier rather than later. Take care Julie

  • Hi April1962

I just thought I’d say hello and wish you well on what I found the hardest part. The waiting and not knowing what the plan is. Once you know then you can focus on that.
I was picked up on my yearly bowel cancer scan. I was in complete denial of lung cancer. It was a kick in the stomach after just settling my stoma reversal.
But March I had a lobectomy and I’m pushing forward with my recovery I am so so grateful that they found it early and got it in the bin!

    Sending you a hug.
