Second scan to see how treatments is going

My husband had his second 3 monthly scan yesterday, to see how treatments going. So far hes had 4 Pembro (keytruda) immunotherapy & 3 zometas. This is the part that gets to us, waiting for results. The last scan took over 4 wks for results & it showed stable with lymph node shrinkage ( that was after 2 treatments).

Not much in the way of side affects, just this ongoing issue with swollen ankles & knee pain ( he fell due to swollen ankles) hes had arthritis in knees/joints for years. But his mobility is now limited due to this. Hes decided to get a mobility scooter, which he didnt want, but not one doctor can do anything about the ankle swelling, so hes conceded, as sitting in 24/7 is driving him mad. And I've run out of options with docs to help with ankles & knee pain.

No cough, no chest pain, no shoulder pain.

The anxiety & fear is through the roof now with scans waiting.

Does it ever get any easier.....x

  • Hi we had our 2nd scan today now the waiting starts he has had four rounds of premexted/prembro the last scan showed that the tumours are shrinking he has had two blood transfusions his side effects are a bit of nausea and fatigue his oncologist has reduced the dose of the premexted to protect his blood levels I don’t know if the waiting gets any easier hope everything is okay with you x

  • Hi   I know your husband is reluctantly getting a mobility scooter, but I think this will really give him back his independence. Maybe he will start going to get the morning paper again ?

Waiting for scan results never gets any easier. Scanxiety  is a real phenomenon and no matter how hard you try not to think about it or worry, it’s just impossible. It is reassuring that he has no cough or pain.

Hope you are doing ok. It is important to look after yourself as well as your husband. X

  •  Hi ,I've been worrying for around 12 years now but through surgery, radiotherapy, sabre treatment, and endoscopy treatment ,I'm still here ,luckily but I have given up "worrying" as the way I look at it I have cancer ,What can be done about it I'm waiting on a scan again now but hey who knows if it can be fixed I personally rely on the medical professionals they know I don't  but don't worry no news is good news and yes I now have to use a mobility scooter as I can no longer do bills but swear by it

  • Hi. I remember talking to you at the start. I hope all goes ok with scans & your hubbys cough as eased. Take care x

  • Hi Tillyboo

We all deal differently  with the scan waiting period.

Early on in my treatment I decided that it wasn't my job to worry about the scan results; that was the job of my cancer team.  And, this approach worked until the day of the results appointment;  no worry the night before, no worry  arriving at the hospital, no worry in the waiting area, However, as soon as I was shown into one of the small consulting rooms, that was when I  always had the 'tummy flip' moment!

Chelle is so right, the mobility scooter is so much better than being isolated at home.  It will give him back his independence.

  • I also have problems with swollen ankles and arthritis in knees and hip, I have bought a recumbent bike which has helped build the muscles back in my legs and has reduced the swelling in my feet. I am now able to walk around a bit more than I used too.

  • We have had an exercise bike since me husband had the stroke, but now finds it to painful to use.

Can I ask where abouts is your cancer? My husband is lung with 2 lower spine bone mets & one small brain met, which the last scan showed as a dot after cyberknife.

He is very reluctant to get a mobility scooter & wants to walk more, but post stroke right leg weakness doesnt help.

His endocrinologist is sending him for knee x rays to see if hes done any damage from the fall he had about 5/6 wks ago. He cant take any anti inflammotories, due to stroke. Doc thinks this is needed to help with pain, but sadly he cant take it, cocodamol & some oramorph are the only pain meds he is taking, but it really only takes the edge off the knee pain as they're swollen, red & quite warm to touch.

So hes very restricted with medication, due to the stroke.

Is a recumbent bike different to a standard exercise bike?

    Thanks for email.

  • Mine was also lung cancer I had a lobectomy in 2023 which successfully removed the tumour but it had metastasis to the brain and I had stereotactic radiotherapy on 2 tumours January 2024 which was successful one tumour remains but it's stable. It does sound as though his knee pain is worse than mine. I have the Marcy recumbent bike I wouldn't have been able to use a standard exercise bike you can google it and see if you think it might help.

  • Are you aware you can request copies of your scans - when having a scan pop back to reception desk after and ask for a form and request IEP anyone to email the results to yourself you can then view in a web browser - only takes about 3 days post scan for them to email them across

obviously you’ll need to request the scan from a previous date to compare

and dependent on person this could cause more anxiety but I like to know what my body is doing asap!

Also I would think if they are waiting such a long time to get back to you after a scan that it is good news
