Hi,
My mum has just been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and has lost a lot of weight and now not eating enough, she has been prescribed fresubin drinks which are apparently awful and she was sick after drinking one of the fruit ones. I wondered if anyone had any tips for making these any more palatable?Mum's not a big eater, never has been but at the moment she seems so weak, and I know she needs these drinks or at least the calories in them. She is mixing complan with nesquick and full fat milk and having the odd cup a soup but it's all she seems to be able to deal with. It may be shock at the diagnosis, fear of being sick, I don't know but she says she knows she has to eat but how can she if she doesn't feel like it? I'm going tomorrow to experiment with smoothies but I think she's just going to reject the idea. Maybe pride... I don't know but I just want her to get stronger.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks. X
Hi Kjb280181. I am sorry to hear of your Mum's diagnoses. It must be distressing for you and your Mum, that she is not eating. I am sorry I can't really help with this, and have no knowledge of fresubin. I was hoping someone else in the group may of come across this, or had tips on nourishment. There are other groups in the community where you may have more success with this question. They are very supportive groups, with people caring for loved ones with cancer. Good luck with the smoothies.
All the best
Hi when my mum was first diagnosed in November she suffered terrible sickness. She was sick every morning and felt sick all day. My mum too has lost a lot of weight she’s gone from being 12stone 7 to 9 stone 7 , she was a size 18 now a 12. we got the doctor to prescribe her anti sickness tablets , she takes 3 a day that has helped tremendously! I’m trying to build my mum up as much as possible before any treatment. I’ve found she’s better eating little and often ( a large meal puts her off straight away) I’ve been buying high calorie food for her and little snacks like trifle, ice cream etc I’m also giving her fortisip compact to drink in between meals. I find these good as they’re quite small but high calorie x
Thank you so much for your reply. I will have a look at the other groups. x
Hi Toot22, Really appreciate your reply, it all sounds very similar to what mum is going through, and were doing the same with the high calorie snacks as anything remotely meal-like is too daunting for her. I will have a look at Fortisip, its not something I have heard of but she might find this better as she is currently mixing complan with nesquick and full fat milk so I know she is ok with drinking. I have suggested anti sickness tablets but for now the doctor is reluctant to prescribe them, but I will keep this in mind. Thanks again for taking the time to reply. Take care of yourself. xxx
Hi Ania5, Thank you for your reply, thats a good weight gain so I will definitely look into this. Thank you again, take care. x
