I'm afraid I have a metastasis, has anyone had a similar experience with new acute pain in a hip?

Hello all!

I just posted on the breast cancer forum but wanted to also post here due to me having three different primary cancers.

1.  in 2014 Dxd with:  stage 1b cervical/uterine adenocarcinoma with radical hysterectomy

2.  in 2022 Dxd with:  stage 1 breast cancer - invasive ductal carcinoma with double mastectomy, no chemo or radiation.

3. in 2023 Dxd with: stage 1 squamous cell lung cancer and **HPV positive (which was shocking!)*, right lower lobe with lobectomy - no chemo or radiation.

Three weeks ago, out of the blue and for no reason, I began having intense left hip pain that was worse at night.  It felt like someone was stabbing me in the hip with a knife and it woke me up.  It wakes me up every night now.  Stretching, resting, walking, icing/heating does not help.  I take ibuprofen which helps somewhat.

I called my lung dr who refused to order a scan for me and I am now waiting to hear back from my primary care physician to see if he will order a scan.

Anyone had metastasis to their hip and if so, what did it feel like and what was your experience?  Im probably worrying for nothing, but with three previous cancers, I'm concerned.  I am a 60 yr old woman and I'm sure most doctors will assume it's arthritis.

Thanks for reading this!

  • Hi

I can imagine how worrying this is for you, especially with everything you have been through already. My lung cancer is metastatic, it started in 2009 in my uterus, so I had to have a hysterectomy. In 2014 it came back in my lungs. I started with hip pain a couple of years after that, and mine is due to osteoporosis as I had my hysterectomy at 39, and then later had to take estrogen blockers. I now have Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction where my pelvis is unstable and is very painful. All because I have low estrogen.

I am glad you are getting this hip pain checked out, and until you know what is causing the pain you will worry, that is only natural. You have been through so much already, and you are bound to think the worst, but hopefully they will be able to put your mind at rest that it is not metastatic cancer.

Please let us know how you get on.

  • Hello ,

As has said, this must be very worrying especially given your history.

I would certainly push hard for a scan to rule out anything sinister and put your mind at rest.

A close friend of mine had a lung cancer diagnosis in the 1980s which was discovered due to hip pain caused by metastasis. However, he had small cell lung cancer which is faster spreading and more to treat than squamus, so not the same.

I do hope you can get the scan to confirm it is not related.
