Hello

can anyone tell me how long each session of intravenous Chemotherapy takes. My husband is having 5 sessions a week for 6 weeks. He will also have radiotherapy and some immunotherapy. As he is fit they are throwing everything they can at him. He has non small cell lung cancer Squamous cell carcinoma.
I will eventually get used to the acronyms

thank you

Mary

  • Hello,

It really does depend on which chemo treatment he is on.

I am on GemCarbo. 2 different types and had the start of my 2nd cycle yesterday. The first part was a flush for 15 mins, then an anti sickness infusion for 15 mins, then another short flush of 15 mins, the the Gem chemo part for 1 hour, then another flush for 15 mins then the Carbo chemo for 30 mins then another flush for 15 mins. So a total of 2hours and 30 mins. I have this on day 1. Then just gem on day 8, nothing for 13 days then the next cycle starts.  My treatment is neoadjuvent and is to help shrink my tumour to see if it can become operable or/and receive radiotherapy.  I will have 3 cycles then a scan then a 4th cycle and hopefully surgery or radio therapy or not. But there are other treatment options I can try Oncologist said.

The chemo nurses are so well informed and take you through every step each time.

if you add the type of chemo and immunotherapy onto your post you might get better help than I am.

    best of luck

    sylv.

  • Hello, I'm sorry to hear of your husband's diagnosis. I can't really say about chemotherapy because I have only had radiotherapy. I think the regime of 5 sessions per week for 6 weeks sounds more like the radiotherapy treatment, because a friend of mine had chemotherapy and she was given it intravenously every three weeks, I think.

I am sure someone with experience in your husband's treatment will comment soon.

    Best wishes, Ann

  • Thank you. As he is having both radio and chemotherapy. I expect that some days will be much shorter than others

I will just have to be patient as my husband will only ask at our oncologist appointment next week.

  • Thank you. Can I ask how you are feeling?

My husband is having both radiotherapy and chemotherapy. They can operate but as he is very fit at the moment they are throwing everything they can at him.
