Hi my lovely Mum is really struggling at the moment. She was diagnosed initially 4 weeks ago and has had all her scans and is due to start radiation therapy for 2.5 weeks on Monday. The treatment plan is then to start Immunotherapy after a 2 week break.

She has gone downhill rapidly in the last four weeks and especially the last two weeks. She is not able to eat any solid food so is having protein drinks prescribed. Her breathing has become a lot more laboured and she feels nauseous a lot of the time. She’s very weak and tired.

The oncologist said her tumour has diffused edges and due to the position close to her spine they won’t be able to operate. There is PDL1 protein present which is why they will treat with immunotherapy.

There hasn’t been any mention of how large or staging of the cancer. I wasn’t there at the appointment but my Dad recorded it so I have listened to it since.

Worried about her this weekend as her breathing is bad and she’s very shaky. Will the radiation therapy likely help with her symptoms? She had a chest infection on top but that has been treated with antibiotics specific to the sample she gave, so we are concerned that the symptoms she is showing is related to the cancer worsening.

I have no idea what the prognosis looks like. I live 2 hours away so trying my best to be here at the weekend but I don’t know if I should stop work to be with her. My Dad is caring for her at the moment. She’s unable to do anything round the house at the moment and is struggling with small tasks like getting in and out of the bath or getting dressed and undressed.

  • Hi, I'm very sorry to hear about your mum's diagnosis. The radiotherapy is to try and reduce the size of the tumour, or to alleviate some of her symptoms to make her more comfortable. Your mum will have regular follow ups and you will be able to find out more regarding what type of cancer it is as there are two main types; SCLC (small cell lung cancer) and NSCLC (non-small cell lung cancer), also, with NSCLC there are three different cancers, i.e. Adenocarcinoma, Squamous cell and Large cell. The type of cancer is usually confirmed with a lung biopsy, which probably would have taken place along with all her other tests prior to diagnosis. Your dad can ask for a copy of the last appointment letter that will have been sent to your mum's GP. This will show the type of cancer and staging etc. Also your dad can request copies of subsequent clinic appointment letters. I have copies of everything when I was diagnosed with lung cancer in August 2023, it helps to be informed.

Another thing is, if your mum is so unwell at the moment, radiotherapy may not take place because radiotherapy can take it out of you physically. I think this should be mentioned on Monday when your mum arrives for her radiotherapy treatment. If the radiologist deems your mum unfit for treatment, she may be admitted for a day or two for further tests, I say this because my friend had to miss treatments because she was unwell with a chest infection.

I would say ring the cancer care service hotline at the hospital your mum is being treated, your dad will have probably been given leaflets and contact numbers, tell them the situation regarding your mum's health at the moment and they can get advice from the specialists going forward.

Regarding you giving up work - this will depend on how well your mum responds to treatment and how well your dad can care for your mum.

    Best wishes to you all.

    Ann

  • Hello there. Sorry you find yourself here but hope it will be of benefit to you.

When my mum was diagnosed she was assigned a cancer nurse who she could contact either by telephone or email with any questions she or we had. Her nurse has all her notes. It might be worth contacting your mum’s cancer nurse for further information.

    Best wishes.

  • Hi thank you so much for taking the time to write this. I have passed it onto my Dad as well. I have now gone though all the paperwork they have but they haven’t yet been sent the biopsy results. They didn’t ask many questions in the oncologist meeting.

Mum is feeling very unwell with a temperature this weekend and is due to start her radiotherapy tomorrow so I have just called the nurses to ask them some questions.

I’m hoping the treatment starts to ease her symptoms. I have to leave to go back home to my kids and partner today unfortunately.

Wishing you all the best. Thank you

  • Thanks so much. I have contacted them today and saved the number to my phone.
