My husband has his biopsy on Friday and due to painkillers and antibiotics is constipated.
Can he have laxatives to help with this? We think it’s increasing the pain levels which is becoming unmanageable.
We’ve spoken to everyone possible about pains aand are waiting for the palliative care team to give assistance.
Sorry to hear your husband is struggling. Yes laxatives definitely can help. My husband has lung cancer so takes all sorts of pain meds and needs laxatives. You can buy senna from the pharmacy that is good to take in the evening. Have a chat with pharmacist if you need something immediately. Also you can get Docusate on prescription which my husband takes twice a day to keep things moving. Suggest you call again to palliative team as they can help with prescribed stuff. Hope he gets sorted soon
Thank you. We’ve bought Senna and he’s taken it already as he’s lying down or sat up for most of the day, he’s not really sleeping at the moment. Around 2hrs last night. Purely because of the pain. I hope he goes to the toilet soon. He just took one pill rather than two as per the instructions for a first time user. He’s going to try two tomorrow if nothings shifts tonight.
We tried calling palliative care and they said they don’t help someone without an end of life diagnosis. So we’re waiting for the referral to whoever the consultant is thinking of. The letter has been sent now but the last one took 17 days to arrive so not holding our breath.
Hoping it works for him to make him more comfortable. If you have a specialist cancer nurse they may be able to help with advice on pain management or worse case GP. We ended up in a&e after a GP call as my husband was in agony with nerve pain. Horrid but clogging up A&E space triggered oncology into action to help him. Hope you both have a better day today
My friend's lung cancer treatment caused her to have constipation. Every possible solution was tried, but nothing worked. She reached 8 days without a bowel movement, which was making her very uncomfortable so she phoned the cancer centre and spoke to a specialist cancer nurse. She was then told to attend the hospital where she was given a strong enema, which thankfully did the trick. We laughed later about it, with her saying it was like giving birth to a 10lb baby.
She now eats lots of fruit and vegetables on a daily basis and also drinks plenty of water, which seems to be working and is keeping regular.
We only have chest specialist at the moment. We ended up having a trip to the Urgent Treatment Centre for pain relief and they’ve diagnosed that the chest infection hasn’t gone yet. Weren’t able to provide pain relief though. Nothing strong enough. Still waiting for palliative care.
Got antibiotics again a different sort. Hope this doesn’t delay Fridays biopsy.
It’s been 13 days now, with three days ago a small bowel movement, nothing more. He took Senna x2 pills last night to see if that helps.
It’s very important to get this sorted. I was in a very similar position on pain relief after my lobectomy operation after 3 days went home from hospital add another week into the mix I was going to the toilet but not properly only tiny amount around a month after my operation I became unwell started with bad cramp pain feeling sick something like heart burn after hours in this state I started feeling like I was going to vomit could not drink and keep down water . I had been going to the toilet still small amounts after phoning my specialist nurse and seeing my GP who told me my intestines were very full I started vomiting faeces . I now take two senna plus stool softeners I drink lots of water . I also stopped all pain relief except for Paracetamol . Never again will I allow myself to get in that position again
He’s been again for a little one today but can’t stop pain meds as he’d be in agony. We’ve told the UTC about this, GP is virtually impossible to talk to and no one else is available to tell anything to as yet as we have no other appointments planned. I’ll try the GP again when I’m at the hospital in the morning waiting for his procedure.
We saw yet another person at the GP and this time it was the Nurse Practitioner who was amazing. She prescribed some ComicCol I think it’s called and it seems to be working better. Nick had the CT guided biopsy yesterday which didn’t hurt until the local anaesthetic wore off then he had the usual pain until he could have painkillers two hours later and the antibiotics are kicking in I think, finally. Pain level last night was a 2 out of ten which is much better than it has been.
All tests are now done and just a waiting game for the consultant to review with the team and a treatment plan and prognosis to be discussed which is scary. Can’t wait to get him on treatment so hopefully the pain disappears. 2 week process took 5 but at least all the tests are now done. I think the results will be ready by next Friday, the team will meet the following Wednesday and then an appointment will be made hopefully quickly after that. Maybe another two weeks? Who knows.
