Surgery and Emphysema

I am due to have surgery tomorrow, a wedge resection to take out a 2cm on the edge of the top of my left lung. Diagnosed through a Pet scan TB1nomo. To be honest I am pretty angry as I had breast cancer again last year, 2nd time after 31 years, same breast.  I had a mastectomy, and ct scan and node biopsy showed no spread, scan clear. However by chance this Tumour was found, this year, and I now know the ct scan last year showed a 1cm nodule, never mentioned! Anyway I have apparently major emphysema, had it for 10 years, never realised it was major. After breathing tests, Southampton are happy to do the op with VATS surgery. Searching on Emphysema on here and noticed people unable to have surgery or told they will need to live on oxygen after. I have only had a phone call from a doctor to tell me they are taking, out a wedge, not up to speed with my details, asked if I have had a pet scan! Had pre assessment with nurses but unable to answer any questions, got a phone call 2 days ago for surgery tomorrow. I'm scared, which is not like me, keep hearing things like collapsed lung etc. Has anyone been in the same position with emphysema? Sorry for long post but feeling quite anxious.

  • Hi

Hope the surgery went ok today, always a bit more interesting when the NHS appears to move quickly on something.

My wife's cancer is rather different and they found quite a lot of something they referred to as webbing and infection in her lungs at one point. She has had a series of 6 collapsed lungs - firstly they just did a simple chest drain then they did pleurodesis through the chest drain and finally surgical pleurodesis and she has not had another collapse since.

  • Hi src60

Thought it was about time I gave an update. I hope your wife is stable and doing well. I read your bio, she has been through hell! My op was a bit more complicated than originally thought.  I had the tumour removed by wedge section, but also had a partial lung decortication due to adhesions from radiotherapy for breast cancer 32 years ago! Bit of a stormy recovery, was in hospital 7 days with a drain, and came home with one. Finally removed last week, so getting there. As predicted the tumour was nsclc, no spread, stage one. The only issue is a clear margin, not 100% sure as the adhesions were extensive. Will have 3 monthly scans, but right now, no evidence of cancer, and I hope it stays that way! My breathing is surprisingly improved and having a breathing test next week. Its looking like my emphysema is not as bad as originally diagnosed, So far I have been extremely lucky, 3 lots of cancer and no lymph node involvement or spread.
