I had surgery last Tuesday which was booked two hours and turned into four hours three hours lung collapse

When I awoke I was in HDU joined everywhere to monitors and drains   I spent five days there and two days on a ward.

I feel like I cannot breathe. Wheezing and tight though I’m not sure it’s the chest.

Any suggestions on breathing exercises or using a nebulisers would be really great. I’ve contacted my nurses and they’ve not called back yet

Feeling anxious with this noises coming out of me

Discharge Summary

7/3 right vats lower lobectomy & wedge resection of upper lobe

  • Hi Artsie, sorry I didn’t see your message yesterday. Have you spoken to anyone yet about this ? X

  • I contacted my nurse eventually.

I’m just feeling extremely sorry for myself that’s all. My stoma reversal was setting and I knew that a two hour op could cause a blip not five days in HDU That’s the one thing I truly can blame on me. I had choice. Op, SABR or watch. I chose the op. In my case time will tell if I have done the right thing

I’m very tearful breathless and fed up and if I’ve one more person say

    oh you look well.

I will SCREAM. I’m one of those…… people will say doesn’t she look well when I’m in my coffin.
    Sorry for the outburst

I do really appreciate your reply it’s so supportive to get a reply. Cancers a lonely place isn’t it.
I will wait for results now.
    Good - benign

    Bad- more treatment needed

Worst- from the Bowel will be stage four

So I’m very stress and full of self pity

    Take. Care

  • Hi Artsie, I had a section of lung removed a couple of years ago, In all honesty you can expect to be in pain for at least a month so please use the pain relief, Also contact your GP as you should not be wheezing at this stage, Keep doing the lung exercises they gave you to do as well as it should help prevent another collapse, Hope you get relief soon xx

  • They didn’t give me any lung exercises I phoned and asked and she said I didn’t have to exercise. I was really keen on doing my pelvic floor pre and post LAR and I recovered quickly from a major op and when I was reversed I followed the exercises every day

I asked her the recommendation. None. I ask could I nebulise yes and that’s all

That’s had a negative affect on my mental health as I’m just sat the walk around the house then sat.

Can you please share any exercises that will help

    Thank you

  • I also wondered what the discharge sheet means

7/3 right vats lower lobectomy and wedge Resection of upper lobe

I’ve tried to find out what this means   I’ve not a clue especially 7/3.

  •   I am not surprised you are fed up, and you have every right to feel that way. I wonder if a GP appointment will help, he will certainly be able to explain the discharge sheet to you. You can also discuss with him how active you should be at this stage. It is hard to rest when we are not used to doing so, but maybe that is what the nurse wants you to do at this stage? Especially as you had a lung collapse.

I know you won’t like me saying this, but it is early days and you need to be kind to yourself. You have had major surgery, and you were very poorly to end up in HDU. I haven’t had this surgery, but I am concerned about the wheezing and tight chest feeling. It doesn’t sound like the lung nurse is overly helpful, so I think a gp appointment is necessary, but if your breathing gets worse you must call 111 and seek advice, please don’t leave it xx

  • Thanks Chelle

    You've really helped me.
I feel like I was booked originally for a biopsy and when I attended was told they had changed their plan I could choose.

He was trying to get wedges 11mm nodules. To wake up knowing my minor procedure turned into life threatening. My heart went into shock and it took five days to lower my BP.
It’s been a nightmare three years and I’m at the end Bowel cancer Aug  21 operation with temp stoma six hour keyhole and open. Six weeks later Hubby diagnosed with PD. 2022 reversal then blockage then husband diagnosed with NAFLD stage 4 then my daughter loosing to babies now I’ve come home to my 12 year old Bengal seriously ill. The vets a money drain with no empathy. £109 for antibiotic and anti inflammatory jab is a joke

    I hope all well with

Let’s hope for some brighter skies soon and some warmth from the sun

  • Hi Ann.

Im afraid I’m not much help to you, I haven’t had any operations so no advice there I’m afraid but I think it’s a very poor show the way you have been left as you are at the moment. I agree with chelle and Marie you should get seen by the doctor at least, the wheeze sounds as though there’s a restriction somewhere in the respiratory tract and if nothing else the doctor could check you oxygen levels for you.

just a thought on your discharge note maybe 7/3 refers to the date of your op - 7th March as that was the date last Tuesday.

I hope you get to see the GP at least, fine for me to say but try and relax a bit, hard I know but if you’re struggling with breathing you will concentrate on making yourself breath and that will just make you think you are more breathless

    Take care

    Julie
  • Hi Julie

Youve just given me a coughing fit. Of course it’s the date. My head is not thinking clearly brain fog from the druggy week I had.
    Thanks for making me laugh

I will see if I can get an appointment to see my GP though I’m not sure I have one. My GP practice is not functional theres only about five chairs in the waiting room and arrows. They are still working near lock down rules. Have two Rottweiler receptionists that want to know all your problems then you go on a list for a dr to phone you. I’ve not seen a Doctor in the flesh since long before Covid.
