I've now had my 2nd biopsy, on lymph node, they failed to get sample first time.

I know I have largish growth on lung (NSC), surgeon has said he could remove left lung but does not think he could do Lymph node, said he would only know when he got inside me!.

He also says that my age is against me, 77, but fit.The next Multi Discipline meeting is on 11th May where all of my results will be discussed.

They have set up on the 18th a meeting with the surgeon & then after  with the Oncologist.

My concern (fear) is that I will be left with a major decision & not have 100% of the facts/experience.

1 It could be operation to remove lung tumor & then radiotherapy to remove Lymph node tumor

or

2 Chemo/Radiotherapy to kill or contain both areas.

Comments please by people who have had similar journey.

Also what are the statistics of Chemo curing the problem as against containing it/life spans after Chemo?

Hope I'm not asking too much for advise/answers

  • Looks like I was asking too much, but replies would be very welcome.

  • Johnoo, based on my experiences and info I obtained prior to treatment my own view for what it's worth is that surgery is still the best way to go if it's an option.

I found the main problem with trying to use statistics as a decision tool was that there are so many numbers to look at the more you search.  Many figures I looked at were inconsistent, varied quite widely based on complex factors such as age, underlying health conditions etc. of past patients they were based on and most are compiled from research / treatment experience from years ago. If you think about 5 year survival for example the studies to calculate stats could have been started 7,8 or more years before publication during which time treatment techniques will have changed.

I found the more you look, the more confusing it gets and in the end I just took the best option available based on advice of my consultants which turned out lucky for me. I hope it does the same for you.

  • Derek,

Many thanks & I agree 100%, the more you try to Analise the harder it gets.

I've now received copy of surgeons report & it's very doubtful for an operation.

I will put on a separate post to ask for advise on the summery diagnosis.

    Thanks for your help
