I had TCC in kidney. Scan end of February all clear. Sudden problems breathing so scan early July and now metastatic lesions in my liver. Appointment Wednesday to discuss. But I've had all the tests, x rays, etc so pretty clear my options are very limited if any. Such a shock, from celebrating clear to practically planning my funeral. What can I expect now please. I know no hope of cure but have treatments helped you ? Am I simply doomed. Please help me. Xx
I saw consultant. He said might be possibility of immunotherapy. I have to have liver biopsy. So many questions. Does that hurt. If no treatment available how long do I have.
I have huge build up of fluid in legs and feet, still breathless despite over ltr fluid drained from round lungs.
This is all so disjointed I'm sorry. My head is spinning, I don't know what to think. Advice please.
First of all I am sorry you find yourself here. Although I have a different cancer (TNBC), I had liver mets and maybe I can offer some hope. I first found I had spread to my liver 3 years ago. Like you, I thought it was the end of the world. I looked up stats and they were not encouraging. I decided I wouldn’t ask for a prognosis as I didn’t want a use by date hanging over me.
Initially I had a biopsy with microwave ablation performed at the same time. Unfortunately the ablation wasn’t successful, but the biopsy confirmed my mets were from the TNBC and were PD-L1 positive, same as my primary tumour. This made me a candidate for the immunotherapy drug Pembrolizumab. I was treated with that, along with NAB-Paclitaxel for a number of months. Not plain sailing as I had an immunotherapy adverse event that caused kidney damage amongst other things. But the treatment significantly shrunk the mets and we tried a second ablation. I have been in remission ever since.
Immunotherapy drugs like Pembrolizumab have changed the paradigm somewhat. Nothing is ever described as a cure, but some patients do respond extremely well and can achieve sustained remission from them. They can also cause serious collateral damage too, as I also experienced.
On your question of whether a liver biopsy hurts, I can only answer for my ablation procedures. Done under general anaesthetic, they leave you pretty sore and in pain if you bend for a number of days. But you are back to normal fairly quickly.
I hope my case can give you some hope. I don’t know whether your cancer is amenable to pembro or a drug in the same class. If it is, read up on how the drug works as it helps you understand the risks. In my case I had a fairly small amount of cancer in my liver, nothing elsewhere, and I wasn’t dealing with any other symptoms.
Hoping there’s a way forward here for you.
