Foreign travel with secondary liver cancer after diagnoses

I have only just been diagnosed following suspected gallbladder problems. Primary unknown, secondary across both lobes and 9cm in one lobe. Biopsy booked 23 Jan.  All I can think about is running to a beach somewhere hot.

Obviously i am still in shock/ denial and we have just had to cancel our Easter 'sandals' holiday which was to be once in a lifetime for us. I realise a holiday is not important but it has become a constant thought through these last 2 weeks of waiting.

How long is the treatment timeline? At what point do you feel well during treatment? Do I need to be in remission?  Has anyone travelled with insurance ?

I feel choked right now with no escape.

  • Hi.

Sorry I hijacked your post by accident thinking it was a group rather than a post and was looking for similar advice about travel.  I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis and about you having to cancel your holiday.  I couldn't tell you about your treatment as I think it would be different for each individual based on their own current health and circumstances.  For example, my husband was diagnosed with secondary liver cancer to primary colon cancer.  However due to a stroke in may he wasn't able to be offered surgery and the only treatment option at that time was chemo which was 4 cycles of combination chemo for him,  Again there are different types of chemo so it may be administered differently.  When my husband was told in he had to have chemo we asked if he would be ok to fly at Christmas as we usually go away but they advised against it due to his lowered immune system from the chemo and the fact that once they start the treatment it can't be delayed mid way through.  It may be best to wait for your results and speak to your consultant or alternatively give them a call and ask if they think you would be ok to travel for a small few day get away prior to your appointment?

I hope everything goes well for you.

  • Your consultant is the best person to ask for advice as it will depend on your treatment and overall health. I have secondary cancer in my liver and have travelled with my consultant’s agreement. I am in remission now but was also able to travel when this was not the case. Insurancewith are pretty good for sorting out travel insurance.
