Secondary liver cancer

Husband had rectal cancer in 2021. Permanent stoma bag now.

Unfortunately he has now been diagnosed with secondary liver cancer, segment 8. Unfortunately can't have chemo as he has heart failure, so starting radiotherapy on 1st September. Has anyone on here had radiotherapy, and how did it make you feel. Was it successful. I am at my wits end because Dr told me that if has spread to the liver the likelihood it has probably spread somewhere else. He also has prostate cancer and on hormone treatment for that.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated

  • I just wanted to say how sorry I am to read your post and how difficult your husband’s situation is. I have recently been diagnosed with secondary liver cancer following bowel cancer in 2019. Unfortunately, I am not as far along as your husband, as I’m still awaiting tests for hotspots before I will be told what my prognosis is. I did have radiotherapy for bowel cancer and didn’t have any side effects apart from less bladder control. I hope someone else on here will read your post that can offer you some useful advice. Wishing you both luck and hope for your futures.

  • Hi Jools63.

Thank you for your reply. Sorry to hear you are going through this as well, hopefully you will have test soon, and know what is what. Hubby starts his radiotherapy next week. Hope you are feeling ok in yourself, my husband has know symptoms apart from being very tired. Sending send to you. X

  • Has your husband started his radiotherapy yet? I hope he’s coping okay if or when he does. Sending you both lots of hugs. We all know how hard it is for our friends and loved ones. X

  • Hi. Starts his radiotherapy next week. They said he would be have 5 was every 3 days, but put it down to just 3 visits. So 1 tomorrow then 2 next week I questioned why, and they said its not near organs. Still a little anxious it won't do anything. But suppose we have to trust them. I suppose at the end of day its just keeping it contained.

Have you had any test yet.

  • Wishing him luck for tomorrow. I can only speak from my own experience of radiotherapy, but it worked well for me. I had 5 days a week for 5 weeks. Then a 3 month wait while it carried on shrinking my tumour. It shrank by around 33%, so was worth the agonising wait. Fingers crossed that it does the same for your husband. I went for my biopsy last Friday, but didn't have it in the end. The ultrasound proved that the enlargement picked up on my scan was due to my covid booster! I'd had it the day before. It's becoming more common now so doctors are aware to check. Colonoscopy on Sunday, so fingers crossed that is clear. My surgery can only go ahead if that's the case. Keep asking lots of questions. Write them down as they pop into your head. Lots of luck for a great outcome.
