Mum just diagnosed with liver tumour

Hi there,

My beautiful 67 year old mum was told on Thursday that she has a big tumour on her liver that she has likely had a while, with some surrounding areas. This was a result of bloods and one CT scan. She was told it is very likely malignant and that this will need to be confirmed with a biopsy.

We have also been told she will have staging scans as well as a head CT due to having other symptoms. It is currently primary liver but could change to secondary.

She has been so poorly for 2 months with all the typical signs - daily vomiting, weight loss, feeling full easily, confused, in pain etc. I'm so angry that she was fobbed off and sent home with anti sickness meds for that long.

It was only last week when the pain in her side was bad enough for them to send an ambulance that she had a CT in hospital and was told this news.

We are now in limbo waiting for the MDT to discuss and refer her to St James's in Leeds.

My heart breaks seeing the fear in her eyes and hearing how frightened she is of dying. I can just about cope with everything else but that is the thing that really breaks me :(

Thank you for reading x

  • I am in the same position although my mum was a fit 82 until symptoms  , we were sent home from pinderfields but still waiting last Monday the doctor phoned her and gave the diagnosis over the phone I thought such news would at least be given face to face, since then we are waiting on the Ntb MTB  . I am caring for her with no information and no idea what I'm doing how are you getting on ? Sending hugs

  • Hi, I'm sorry to hear your news.

Unfortunately we saw the consultant at Pinderfields on Tuesday last week and were told there are no treatment options and mum has a prognosis of 3 to 6 months.

I've been just about surviving ever since, only eating and showering so that I can be there for my mum and help her live every day however she wants to. She's in a lot of pain and very tired. The macmillan palliative care nurse who came out was just fantastic and couldn't do enough for us.

I'm just so sad we are in this situation, and angry and fearful.

My advice at this time would be to contact the Macmillan information centre at Pinderfields as they can get your mums nurse specialist to update you, they can also support you both. They're open during the week you can call in or phone them. Good luck x

  • I'm so sorry to hear about your mum I truly am x and thank you for your advice appreciate it so much you take care of yourself and your mum

  • So sorry to hear about your husband soapy58. Thats devastating. Can I ask you how did the biopsy affect him? My husband is having biopsy next week and I worried. He has cirrhosis and hcc.  I need to know what to expect. Thank you in advance

  • Thats awful I really feel for you.  You must look after yourself though. Just be there as much as you can and tell her everything that you need to say. My mistake was I waited for the right time to tell my mum things and i left it too late. Sending prayers and strength x
