Dad (68) had stomach cancer 2 years ago and we found out just before Christmas he’s got a lesion on his liver and this is causing fluid around his lungs (which he is having drained off to help with the breathlessness) he has gone downhill quite fast due to being too breathless to do anything much mainly I think. He will start chemo soon if he is strong enough but the consultant said it might not work.

Mum is doing an amazing job as always of looking after him, making him eat healthy meals and keeping his strength up. But she’s struggling emotionally and finding it hard to talk about things.
i feel so upset I can’t see them because of Covid (live 2 hours away)  and I don’t know if they’re telling me how bad it is....... maybe to protect my feelings, I just don’t know if I’m ever going to see my dad again I’m so scared and I don’t want to upset my mum by pushing her for more info....

I just pray he holds out until this lockdown is over and numbers fall so we can visit, I know seeing the grandkids would really lift their spirits.... it’s so horrible I’m sat here feeling so helpless

can anyone give any ideas how I can support mum through this?

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

I'm very sorry to read that your dad has stomach cancer which you've recently discovered has spread to his liver. It's understandably a very hard time for the whole family and it natural that you're looking for ways to support your mum.

I hope you don't mind me suggesting that you also join the family and friends group, as there you'll connect with others who have a family member living with cancer. It's a safe and supportive place to discuss your worries and emotions and also to see how others are supporting their family.

If this is something that you'd like to do just click on the link I've created and then choose 'click to join' or 'join' (depending on the device you're using) on the page that opens. You can then introduce yourself and post questions in the same way as you posted here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
